Is anyone else nervous that 21 of the states are gathering signatures on petitions to ask to secede from the United States because of how the election went?
Not really nervous about this at all. None of these petitions was put forward by a state legislature. According to US sources, similar petitions were put forward after both of Bush's wins as well. Lastly it is illegal for any state to secede from the Union. It is more a method of protest.
I have been keeping treack of this news also, they need x amount of signatures before they are valid but it looks like many are on their way to acheiving that. Not certain of what that will mean when they do but could be a protest as stated...love the wording on the Texas one though!
It is on the Whitehouse website and the number is more like 29 now. It does show a level of unrest though.
The magic number for signatures is 25,000. When the reach that number it is mandatory for the White House to respond. That can simply be a simple... "We got your petition and will take it under advisement...thanks". If you go to the website "We The People" you can see how the online petition system works. The site is tied in with the White House and exists to allow US citizens a voice in Government and to voice concerns directly to the President. This right is enshrined in the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
one of the lastest petitions is "Strip the citizenship from everyone who signed a petition to sucede and exile them."
This is a quote from a canoe news article:
In asking for the president to "peacefully grant" permission for his state to withdraw from the union, creator Micah H., of Arlington, wrote: "To do so would protect its citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government."
I don't see this news on any of the main news sites... not even Faux News.
I don't think you see it on major news services because it isn't real news. It is true yes, but then any US citizen can begin a petition for any purpose on the White House website. Here is a link to the Washington Post story about it.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/11/12/states-petition-obama-administration-to-secede/
there is a story on www.cnews.canoe.ca/ just scroll down to the bottom and you'll see it or go to the official site www.whitehouse.gov/petitions
it is no longer 21 it is 47....how serious they are i have no idea but a rain on the parade is that govorner rick perry (R-texas) said that they would not leave the union .
However i would love if they did so they could start over ...even though they would have a small issue with a world war ..think about it china would want there money and if states left the union that would put more burden on the states left in the union and they would not want to bear the brunt of it all so there would be a civil and world war going on simultaniously ..tradjic but they did it to themselves. yes i know we would be sucked down the drain as well but oh well .
I wouldn't about this yet. The signatures are not screaming in... Legalizing weed seems more important based on signatures However I'm curious if the fiscal cliff will make people sign out of panick.
I never thought costco shelving could be so amazing
I think when the new taxes come in things could get interesting-and tense in the States.
The petitions require 25000 signatures within 30 days to receive a response.
The only thing that this will do IF the petition meets this requirement is get a response from the government.
They don't have to actually do anything about it.
I wouldn't be worrying about this, as tempers cool down, these will likely die a quiet and definite death.
I don't know much about the American constitution, but I'm pretty sure that 25000 people would not be able to force the federal government to let a state leave the union...
