In a crisis, the crime rate will be crazy. But, in Canada, we are not able to legaly carry a gun no matter WHAT crisis has happened. And its a sure bet, that even in a full melt down, there will STILL be a governing and law, and that means that it will still be a felon to carry a firearm here in Canada. And for those who chose to, they will be the ones who the law will be trying to defuse first.
So, for the rest of us, we will be left with only our witts, and common sence, to protect ourselfs from being targeted.
I chose bear spray as I am a climber, so I always have some for when I am out in the mountains. But for urban, I can only rely on good judgment and a open eye, to stay as clear of trouble, as I can
Good point on us not being allowed to carry fire arms, bear spray works great! Another weapon I would recommend is a police baton because it never runs out of swings, is generally quiet, and has no shelf-life! Law enforcement uses it against riots and to defend themselves so us preppers should step up our game!
-Great Post though, nothing wrong with it! Just added something 🙂
We won't be able to carry handguns but last time I checked long guns are still legal for anyone with a license to have at home. The more people that own firearms the more political pressure we'll be able to exert. They can be transported unloaded.
Jump through a few hoops, get your Possession and Acquisition License. You'll be better off for it and so will the rest of us.
If there's a club nearby with reasonable rates (ours is less than $20 a month) join and you can get your restricted tag as well and own a handgun for target practice.
Perfesser is totally correct about the unrestricted firearms. And if law is still in existence, your bear spray is as illegal as restricted firearms. Any attempt to use it on people or on animals (if not being attacked by them) is strictly prohibited. You too would join the felons list. Get a PAL or just stick with your wits, cause the bear spray ain't the answer. Perhaps a potato gun.

just a note on bear spray, dog spray, pepper spray, or any of the like... Its not as simple as people think it is.
I have responded to a few calls where spray has been used and beleive me... it is VERY effective... unfortunatley it effects EVERYONE around it. Learn the proper techniques to using these kind of defensive items BEFORE the day comes when you need them. If it is sprayed within a house or enclosed building space, it will fill every nook ande cranny before you know what hit you. one simple tip is to close your eyes and hold your breath when you are spraying it. I know that sounds counter intuitive as you need to see where it is being sprayed, but if you aim for center mass (the chest) it will splash and rise and get on their skin, nose and eyes regardless. It is an extremely potent irritant, so take precautions that you are not debilitated by your own device.
The proper technique as I have been taught is to point the spray at the attacker, cover your face with your other arm (nose to elbow-pit no cover your nose), hold your breath and close your eyes. then after a moment of spraying, run like hell the other direction and hope you got the bastard
See you all after.
You also need to make sure that you are pointing the can in the right direction. Being in a hurry it is possible to have it pointed in the wrong way and then you might have a few problems.
In any theatre I have been in there were ALWAYS strict laws against people brandishing/carrying/possessing firearms. In Iraq and Afghanistan there were rules stating quite clearly that one could only keep firearms at home, not carry them, let alone use them in the streets... yet it was the norm to see shepherds and merchants carrying around their AKs as a matter of course. They were not accosted by the police and as long as they weren't pointing them at us we were not going to react violently to them carrying them as well.
In the Balkans there were very strict laws against the population possessing firearms that were beyond hunting grade kit and yet we couldn't cross a bloody city without finding civilian/citizen checkpoints where the locals had somehow managed to get their hands on a batch of Zastavas/AKMs/AKMRs and a few LMGs and RPGs.
In Argentina during the slow slide into anarchy in the 80s/90s more and more people were carrying concealed weapons without license. To the point, in fact, that there were more concealed carry weapons on the street in the hands of private citizens then were weapons period in the hands of police and military.
So when the SHTF here, do not think for an instant that you will have any sort of advantage. I'm not advocating illegally carrying firearms, but I am advising you to not enter into a false sense of security because you think that people will obey the law as the enforcement of society's rules begins to falter. Also, as stated above by those with experience, get trained on the kit you're going to use. Just having the item does not make you proficient with it. In fact if you don't train with and regularly practice with your gear, you're wasting your time having it. Trust me, there are millions of dead throughout the ages from having gear, but not knowing how to use it. And just dosing a few targets with pepper spray and calling it good is not training, nor is it practice. It's self deception. I have personally fought through a police issue pepper spray dose during training. It sucked, but I still managed to beat the hell out of the guy with the OC canister... who by the way, thanks to my training, got almost as much of a dose as I did, which is why he got beat up.
Remember people, there are no bloody magic bullets. No little ways around the system of life in the battle space and definitely no way to beat good training.

Most manufacturers of bear spray offer an inert version of their cans which retailers who carry their product, will bring in on request. I highly recommend you train yourself on the inert canister so you are aware of the spray characters for your specific model (they don't all behave the same way!). Some have more concentrated spray and go further distance - some have more propellant/chemical and will spray for longer. Try using the inert spray in calm conditions, with wind and then at night.
Lastly note bear spray generally only has about a 3 year shelf life and once the seal is broke during any activation, it soon become inoperable (the chemicals clog up the nozzle). Do not test bear spray. Check with manufacturer regarding shelf life if not stamped on unit.

This is excellent solid sound advise, nothing beats good training to create muscle memory...
Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...
we have been renovating lately and it is somewhat nice to have the nail gun around
It's good to learn how to use simpler weapons given the collapse of a JIT system needed to manufacture and ship ammo.
I don't think firearms will be used for crime more in a shtf situation. Just about anything can become a weapon if the person wills it. A knife is the most dangerous and most used weapon of choice in the world cause it is easy. Don't think people with guns are the scary people. My point is anything can become a weapon and what ever you choose, be trained to use it physically and mentally.

The mental training is the difficult part. If a person pulls a gun can you pull the trigger knowing what your gun can and will do.. Up close its difficult to pull the trigger..

The first thought that comes to mind is 'Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.' A gun is just a bigger hammer with a longer handle during SHTF. Count of desperate individuals to use a gun if they have access to one. The hopeless use them every day during good times. Why would they not when it gets ugly?
Than= I’d rather be rich than poor.
Then= I first became hungry then I ate.
There = She is there now.
Their = They have their things.
They're = They're going to the mall.
To = They came to the house.
Too = That's too bad.
Guns require training if you want to be efficient and on target. Knife requires no skill and can come real fast if you let your guards down. For those nervous people who are trigger happy, I hope you don't shoot innocent people. If you have a gun, don't put yourself in a close quarter situation. Being shot once won't deter a deranged assailant who is on adrenaline and will over power you with a knife. Guns are only good at mid to long distances. A knife wielding maniac can get to you in 2 secs and stab you multiple times before you can pull out your gun and aim.
There are weapons for different situations be it guns, sharp or blunt weapons. Know what works in what scenario and you will live a little longer.
Personally I'll only use a gun if I absolutely have to. Blunt trauma weapons and some rope or handcuffs are more preferred. Sharp weapons if needs to be escalated. Remember almost all confrontation happens within 50m or less.
