Dog owners wont have it so bad, if they need to get out now. Enough dog food and vitamins, along with water, and your good to go. But what about those of us that have a cat?
Food, and water are easy enought, but what about traveling? Litter box? long term?
Are you prpared to have your cat put down to save it from suffering?
What steps have you put in place to sustain your cat's life?

Before my wifes cat went to the pearly gates.. She (the cat) would poop in the grass if i took her outside on a leash.. you too could train your cat.. just required treats and every day for almost a month...

cats have a very strong survival instinct. if left outside they will survive. i have seen people in town leave their cats behind when they move and the cat has become wild and have been living outside for years.

When I had a cat(s), it was easy to travel with, as I could, if I wanted, always find a spot in the SUV for the litter box and a food & water dish.
That being said, if you're going to "bug out with kitty" and if you have hatchback, it should be easy enough too. If you have a camper in a pick-up, even better. Small fifth wheel or trailer also works, as I used to travel with my parents as a kid with a cat for years, and we would let the cat out to roam and it would "always" come back the following morning before departing; only once did we have to stay an extra night cause the cat didn't come back.

Oh, and for those without room in a vehicle for a litter box: yes, a cat will defecate outside quite easily, if you always have a small bag of their "used" litter on hand, so they can catch the scent. Just sprinkle a little in a sandy area on the ground and your cat will go right quick if need be ....
Final tip: if you're worried about "puss" getting loose, their are such things as leashes (& harnesses for cats).

Training your cats now to go on a harness and leash would be great idea's if you plan on traveling with them, and then the key is to just get out and do it, I took my one cat camping, canoeing (it was a calm lake), we would often walk to the store and she was trained to ride in a backpack and then she would just hop out when we got to the park etc, as walking at her pace could be a lot slower.. and it seemed every time I left her with Dh, and came back, there were always ladies around, so if you are single, this is a great icebreaker LOL

So ... another reason for me to get another kitty, farmgal; to meet Ladies? I am still getting over the loss of my last cat (of 16+ years) from when I had to have him put down back in January '13.
I might again ... but only if I decide I am not going to travel as much, i.e. for business.
I'd like to get a dog too, but same reasons apply - not until I settle more.

Honestly, every single time I walked away, the ladies flocked, I had a 15 year old boy sigh and say, so many pretty girls at the local soccer meet but they were all wrapped up in talking among themselves, told him the story, he took a rabbit the next week.. bam, ice breaker and it was the girls all over him LOL while his mom and I cracked up!

I think that is excellant advice farmgal. Hmm gPRS, maybe you can help care for and walk a dog or cat for an elderly neighbour ? Just you revealing how you miss your cat is touching. Most women can relate to a mans kindness to others and animals as I guess most of us are inherently wired to be nurturers and yes it is a neutral icebreaker and maybe something in common .

About 10 or 12 years ago I went up to 'Fish Lake' (I know, how original *sigh*) near Nordegg and the camp ground attendants had a cat that had the hind quarters of a rabbit. It walked with it's front paws and hopped with it's rear. Now that's a conversation piece. I've never seen anything like it before or since. If it were mine during a bug out situation, I'd humanely snuff it. Too much trouble to keep a freak animal like that going when it gets really tough.

I also have a 15 year old blind dog that I would humanely put down if it got into a bug out situation. It might seem cruel but putting him through the stress of a bug out would be even meaner IMO.

Thanks for the tip, Syn. I had thought of it, actually. But most of the older ladies in my apartment building have tiny dogs which I am not too keen on.
Wouldn't want to appear hypocritical.

Followup: I met a hot 40 something on my way back in to the apartment building tonight, as she was leading her bull terrier out.
