srd,
Nice find.
So, the liberal legacy continues to haunt us, tying us to a UN protocol to have weapons stamped or engraved on the receiver, not just the barrel as is commonly used by manufacturers. Send a message to the Minister, now in charge, Vic Toews before it is too late.
Other than the specific item, the remainder of the show is rather long winded.
Mountainman.
So one gun control can I own a lot of guns or is it now telling us we can only own so many and what will the government do if we own several
Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it
it means that the guns serial number will be stamped everywhere on the gun, so it is easier to track and trace. right now it is usually only on the barrel, which on most firearms can be replaced. When you register a firearm, they record the serial number in a database so that if it is ever used in a crime it can be flagged. or for you government fearists, they know who has what gun, and could come and know where they are if they want to come take them.
See you all after.
Oh great

Um.... there is no registry in Canada.... so......
for long guns there isnt. handguns yes is there not? Im under the impression they are.
also when you purchase the gun the serial number and the owners information (including PAL number) are recorded together. so the numbers tie you to the gun and vice versa. The reciever is now going to be stamped (or so its proposed), and the receiver is generally what is considered the "firearm" part of the gun.
See you all after.
You are correct in that restricted firearms are required to be registered. You are also correct that the serial number of long guns are recorded by the store along with your PAL number. What you do after that is up to you. You can sell a long gun to whoever you like... with the proviso that they have a valid PAL. There is nothing to state you must record that information.... so....
Wow why can't it be like the states everyone has a gun lol

Well consider this the US population is now approximately 315 million and the population of Canada is now about 35 million. The US has about 9 times the population of Canada.
In 2007 there were 31,224 firearm related deaths in the US. Just over 17,000 suicides about 56% of the total and just over 12,000 homicides 41% of the total. in 2007 there were 188 firearm related homicides in Canada. Adjust that to the size of the US population that would be about 1,700 (9 x 188). In other words the US firearms related homicides are 8 times higher than in Canada.
It is very difficult to get recent data for suicide deaths involving firearms in Canada. Almost as if someone was attempting to manipulate the data. What has been shown is that as suicide rates involving firearms drop, rates from other causes increase, leaving the overall suicide rate relatively constant.
Anyway my point is that is that there are more restrictions on firearms in Canada and training is required. However most people have the opportunity to own a firearm if they so wish. Personally I would take the hassle any day over an 8 fold increase in gun crime.
Folks,
You might be missing the point of the radio broadcast.
The point they wanted you to know, is there is legislation in the works to have Canada support and enforce a United Nations firearms bill that requires the name of the manufacturer, country of origin and an individual identification number permamently stamped or etched on the receiver. Currently, North American manufacturers stamp that information at the chamber end of the barrel, usually on the left hand side.
So, JAB, this is significant because a foreign power (UN) is telling Canada how to legislate how firearms are marked. Frankly, the UN can piss-off. They can mismanage their own affairs, stay out of the affairs of a sovereign nation. It was bad enough when our local government was trying to micromanage the personal property of Canadians, but an outside agency telling us how we will do things??? That is just wrong. The only thing worse than the mafia getting a hold of the gun registry, would be the UN having a copy.
Just my 2 cents of course,
Mountainman.
I think your right mountain got a little off topic lol

Except that the hassles have little to no affect on crime. The hassles are only meant to discourage the law abiding
from wanting to own firearms.
Completely agree MM that the UN can go do whatever it is they do with themselves behind closed doors. I was refering to the idea of registering long guns here in Canada which is no more... so... once you buy it.. and sell it... there is no record of where it went. That is for long guns only though. It WILL be easier to trace any restricted firearms.
JAB
Gun related crimes commited by non llicensed illigal firearm owners vs gun related crimes commited by licenced legal firearm owners.
That's a statistic I would like to see. Anyone know where to find it?
See you all after.
