With the recent mudslides in BC and near Banff, I've been thinking about the litany of natural disaster that I might encounter in Edmonton or around Alberta. I would never have thought of mudslides along the Trans-Can on my way to Banff and now I'm wondering what other things I've never thought of.

I think the obvious would be wildfires in rural areas, floods, local tornadoes. Any others? Any specific to Edmonton or Calgary?

Thanks!

Actually, the power outages are also an issue in many areas lately. Just like the guys talking EMP, no power no heat, no gas stations.. etc

My biggest threat here is fires. I've did everything possible to prepare and mitigate a loss. I steadily clean up dead fall/standing, I have a million gallon pond reservoir with a large primed pump with 3" - 300' of hose, and a chainsaw ready to go at all times.

We have also lost power 3 times in the last 3 weeks (4-7 hours) due to wind/lightning. The first time it happened I realized I had a few issues with my 6k solar power inverter. I had to fire up my 11kw Kubota diesel generator and manually switch the transfer. I'm in the process of upgrading my solar system from 6kw to 10kw in order to run two water heaters for livestock.

Ice storms that take out power for weeks at a time like happened in Ontario can occur anywhere in our winter wonderland of a country...we purchased kerosine heaters to help keep the pipes from freezing in the basement..need to get wood burning stove downstairs and get an insert put in the "decorative" fireplace upstairs...made arrangements with a tree remover friend that if people didn't want their wood after removal he could drop it off here instead of at the dump spot...free wood will be great!
