Hello!
Many of you met me at the meeting yesterday, I'm the gal selling THrive! You may of also heard me making a pretty bold comment regarding my feelings on what I say happening at Disaster Alley. The city claims it wants people to be aware and prepared. And CEMA puts on Disaster Alley to make them aware? Bull. There were huge shows of rescue forces after rescue forces with huge equipment and bigger vehicles giving everyone the impression that no matter what, these big bury men will come running to your rescue the momment you pick up the phone. There was NO mention of what happens when you don't get the privilage of calling 911. The one table with bug out bags was found by me to be seriously lacking and inadequate. I spent the last 18 hours stewing on my comments and here is my very first Alberta Preppers Post! Im going to co-ordinate and h. elp facilitate putting on a Public Info Day! And do what Disaster Alley didn't do! I don't like to complain and not do anything about it. I also believe the more people who become preppers, the less people turn into savages when SHTF. I figure we could do something simular to the LDS nights (though I have not attended one), but I would try to make it a saturday. I would want to invite the cannery, have a Thrive table of course, approach some of the stores that sell survival gear of first aid items, the guy who had the books whould be a great asset, as well as dispays on all kinds of things, from storage, bug out bags, vehicles, water purification, dry canning, membership tables for both the prepper and survival group, and maybe even something by the scotts or something (you cant start training kids too young) I even see sponsorship possiblities from the gun ranges, archery ranges, etc. Putting things together like this is something I kinda used to do. Would you guys as the preppers group be interested in something like this? Im a brand new member so I dont wa nt to overstep bounds or anything. I would love to get a commitee together and go from there. This would go on AFTER summer some time to give us planning time.

I think you have a good idea brewing. I see that although emergency preparedness week may have fallen a little short, it is normally a good starter point for the average non-prepper. Unfortunately, preppers / survivalists tend to have a bit of a stigma, the tinfoil hat-wearing guy living in his nuke bunker thing. So if you want to promote your event, you'll have to do so carefully. This is why associating it with preparedness weeks makes sense as an extension to their event, simply picking up where the 72 hr kit left you.
If instead you had a preppers fair, you would likely end up with mostly us, the already converted, attending, which would miss your point of bringing in new people on board. So maybe it would be better to work in collaboration with next year's prep week organizer to synergicaly achieve the goal instead of working to point their shortcomings.
Just my nickel's worth...

You have a good Idea there and the time line is perfect, lets have a get together in the near future with some of our core group and your self and Jayme.....I was more then pleased with Saturday's turn out, it maybe time to get a little more pro-active and show the public we dont where tin foil hats, and lose the stigma attached with the name prepper.....Emergency preparedness.......works .......

Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...
Welcome to the forum preppergirl, your frustration with what the general public is missing out on and what "organizations" put forward as preparing is felt equally by many members here.
A few of us have been working behind the scenes to put together an event like you propose. Some members in Ontario have been organizing a similar event for this summer and we were hoping to do something with that if we could, but there are many challenges. Mainly time and communication, then followed by location, costs and volunteers.
Putting together Alberta wide meetings was a first step to get people together to address this issue and I think this would be a great topic for the next such get together.
It was discussed yesterday that the Central group and this South Central group work on an Alberta wide meeting for possibly July or August so that people from all parts of the province can have time to plan for it.
I think looking at August gives us time to put something more organized together.
It takes a few posts before a member can use the personal message option so please do so and we can chat in more detail about plans for the next meeting, then post the important details.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
Hi Preppergirl,
This sounds like a great idea!
I will soon be working on some handouts that can be used for just such an event, hopefully I can get them ready in time.
Those of us that actually stick our necks out there to promote preparedness are few and far between.
I happen to agree with you that when more people are REALLY prepared, the better off we will all be when an event happens.
Good luck to you on this and you have my full support!
