the closest public-free- gun range is south off highway 1 at scotlake hill or hwy 68 to sibbald flats road.
just after entering the forest there is a sign on the left saying homestead provincial gun range.
go down that road about 7 km and first you pass a private members only club gate called the rosebud club,
next a shotgun range on the left, no rilfles allowed, and finally the road ends in a turnabout and the gate
for the range is located there. you must walk about 100m , with your gear, to the actual range site.
I believe you can shoot out to 500m at that site.
to join the rosebud club, you must be nominated by a member in good standing for two years and applications are
being taken for 2013 season now.
wow talk about elitist gun nuts.
the government has done a good job of making the requirements for a range so stringent that few can afford to
adopt them and then close their doors for all. in the late 70's I had the choice of 7 ranges within 20 km and now none!
list your free access outdoor ranges here, what they have for target range choices etc.
i'm looking for a steel knock down range for rifle and pistol practice, and fun shooting games too.

Spruce Grove has a nice range and the membership is fairly reasonable. ($130/$140 for individual/family) You are required to take an orientation course which is a one time cost of $30. There are a lot of groups that meet there and have weekly practices and scheduled events. IPSC, the Swiss rifle group, Wild Rose Action, Cowboy action, small bore and clays all have active members out there. Their longest range is 300 yards. You are not required to buy ammunition on site and can re-load to keep the costs down unlike a number of indoor ranges. Buggie, I think there is a newer range that has been set up closer to Calgary, but I can't remember exactly where. Anyone from Calgary go out west to shoot?

I had heard that the range east of calgary in Sheppard was being closed because the city was annexing the the area... and didn't want errant shells falling amongst the upstart acreages.

Anyone know if that is true?

There is a range north of Strathmore as well, Serviceberry I believe it's called. There hours of operation are unfortunately limited as there are several groups that have specific evenings booked.

We have a place to go shoot skeets but the farmer might not appreciate 20 of us showing up at once 😳

For central Albertans, Ponoka has a small range that we have used recently for '3-gun' and IDPA matches.

It has only a 110 metre range but has new target stands and some steel props. They are slowly building everything up since the complete collapse of the once proud, Rocky Mountain House range. The Rocky Mountain range should be avoided as the executive membership is a bad mix of old cranky men with a bit of power and have kicked out all the large groups like the Cowboy Action club(40% membership), defensive pistol, silhouette and others.

The old wild west saloon city has been removed from the property and all the buildings in the old camping ara have been moved off-site. All that remains is the new shelter put up last year.

There are good ranges out there. Respect the rules so they can stay open.
