All considering, you need to look at acreage required to provide enough grain, and vegetables per person. For live stock, every different type needs are different, but still require a lot of area for grazing and even more for winter feed. Also you will need a reliable water source, and possible channeling to irrigate your farmland (high pressure irrigation might not be feasible in the future).
Farmers, please give advice here, since mine is limited to what I have read and seen on PBS.

or... Secure your own water supply through solar water pumping

Hey all, I appreciate the info and the input. We are leaning towards something small, not farming. In a well-treed area, near the mountains. Head for the hills type of thing. Unfortunately, I have been away from Canada for over 20years and am just now getting acclimated to winters again, and what is what over here. We know nothing about digging into a mountain, or using mirrors to catch the sun, or any of what denisgedmonton was saying-- but we are deeply interested. Reading your previous posts in different categories is an education for me and my husband-- greatly appreciated!
