I'm new to the world of prepping, luckily I have a lot of the basic skills to survive if something did happen, initially. But to survive for the long term, I need to start stockpiling things. Basically I'm asking for a little guidance from the experienced people on here.
Where do I start???? There are sooooo many directions to go. However I think I'm going to be a "bug in" prepper and not a "bug out" one. I have a 10 acre hobby farm, but I'm looking to upgrade to a quarter section so I can start from scratch. That way I can have more space for animals and a good size garden. Along with more than one water source.
OK, here are the short notes of survival:
In any extreme situation you cannot survive for more than:
3 minutes without air
3 hours without shelter
3 days without water
3 weeks without food.
If you can not breath for 3 mins, nothing else matters. After that:
If you can not stay warm or cool for 3 hours, nothing else matters. After that:
If you can not stay hydrated for 3 days, nothing else matters. After that:
If you can not eat for 3 weeks, nothing else matters. After that:
Immediate security can come from a baseball bat or a hunting knife for starters. After that:
You can build on your survival preps in the direction where you think the treats are the greatest and those preps which bring you the most comfort.
Chances are, my plans and your plans are not the same for long term survival. We do the best we can under our individual circumstances.
With no offense intended, your question "Where do I start????" is a lot like asking 'How fast does a blue car go?'
If you start with the rule of 3 and expand from there, catering to your particular situation you should not stray too far from the correct path.
I know it's not a great answer but I hope it helps. Asking questions of those more 'in the know' will net you some pretty good solutions to your perceived problems.
Hope that helps,
BTR

In no particular order:
Food
Water
Fire
Shelter
Medical
Security
Travel
These things tend to blend into each other. For example, you need fire to cook your food, you often need water in the preparation of your food. You may have to travel for medical aid and you'll probably need security for your shelter. Take your priorities from the list (or make your own) and figure out how to acquire what you'll need. Learn how to store it, prepare it, fix it, build it, hide it and use it. Follow the rule of three that BTR gave you.
There are members on this forum who've been at it for decades and some who've been at it for months and you'll learn from all of them. Besides prepping, we also have another thing in common on this site, we're all still learning. Go through the topics and start reading. In a few months or even weeks, we'll be learning new things from you.
Welcome to the site.

Check out my thread called "staying focused for new preppers". It contains a relatively easy way to prioritize your preps. I've also included an "example" prepping list to it just to give you reference. If you already have a piece of land and a hobby farm on the go, then you are way ahead of the game. Take stock of your existing inventory and insert it into the list where necessary. Then start filling the gaps from the. Top to the bottom. This should give you a basic idea of what you have and what you need, and what you should look for next. Hope it helps! And welcome to the forums.

See you all after.
Thanks for the info everybody. Don't worry about hurting my feelings there BTR, the CF took those 17 yrs ago...lol
This is the question I've been wrestling with as well. I think I'm going to start with an everyday carry bag since I have alot of food stocked up now. Who knew I was already prepping?
hi gunnerdog-I like you am fairly new to this and wondering where to go with it. I also live in the country already (although am stuck in Spuce Grove for another year and a half) What I am going to concentrate on are the main things -water-food-heat.
We have a well, so when I have it shock clorinated this spring I am going to talk to them about what size and type of hand-pump I should get. I also have a number of "lifestraws" that will filter water as you drink through it and take out a number of health hazards, as we have lots of water running through our land.
Food-wise I want to be more self sufficient. So I am going to build a root-cellar, that will have a hidden entrance, another exit (spy hole) and will have some supplies in it. I am also planting apple trees, rasperry bushes (to suppliment the wild ones i have), and other "easy" plants that can be used for food.Even caragana pods can be eaten. I've also bought some food that has a long shelf life, and will get more.
I have bought a small generator, but don't plan to use it a lot, as that is really just a short-term solution in a snowstorm or something. We use candles and flashlights when the lights go out. And I am going to make sure i have a good supply of wood (it's there, but needs to be cut to length, split and stacked). And fake fire logs, as i find they burn hot and last long through the night.
I am also planning to do something I never thought I would-getting a licence to have a gun,and buying a couple.Plus I will get some additional training. I have a long gun, but want something i can carry around my place if things get bad.
I am also getting the materials to make a gate that can be locked across my driveway (there are trees on either side) even though I am not in a rush to install it. I am going to stock up on some building supplies that might be hard to get, but useful. Like mortar and sand and stones for walls.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
Just a little side note: Those 'one match light' firelogs tend to put a lot of soot into a chimney. If you choose to use them make sure you have really hot (real) wood fires as well to help reduce/remove the soot from your chimney OR clean your chimney on a very regular basis.
