Well, my first attempt to expand sources for information may have been too much for many who visit here.

Here is a site that will have more information for the masses. Much less scary than Get Off the X.

http://www.survivalblog.com/

James Wesley Rawles's site has plenty of knowledge. I mean, tons of information, links to good vendors and many contributing sources. It would take months to read all the information on his site.

I hope this is helpful to some, if not all who visit this forum.

Keep your powder dry,

Mountainman.

I'm impressed, plan was to spend five minutes there and after three hours I decided it deserved a bookmark.

I've had survivalblog. com on my desktop for at least a year. I visit the site daily. For me, JWR is a must read. Also, get his books, Patriots and Survivor, you'll regret not having read them before.

Finally. Some folks writing their thoughts and opinions. Good work.

I have read all 3 of JWR's works. I enjoyed them all. I look forward to the third book of the Patriots trilogy to arrive. Hope JWR gets it out before Christmas! 😉

His website is very good and has been around for a long time. I hope others find it helpful.

I have read the two fictional books from JWR. I do question though the whole gold and silver aspect that he really focuses on. If I have something for barter if/when the SHTF, I do not see myself ever accepting coins for trade. I am going to want something I can drink, eat, shoot, SURVIVE! Them coins are not going to feel very good or comforting if I am starving, thirsty, freezing, etc. Perhaps a WAYS down the road it might come in a bit handy and make me wealthy, but I do this so my family and I will survive. Beyond that I truely did enjoy his books and I think there is some good info in there, I guess I just hope that it never gets as bad as what he protrays.

I fully endorse SurvivalBlog.com

It's great wealth of knowledge touches on just about every subject you can imagine, the majority submitted by everyday people who are well educated about the profession/subject they write about. It is a good "non-scary" website to introduce new people to, but even there, they make no apologies for the case for firearms (nor should they) . If you have a gun-phobic person you want to introduce to prepping they might get turned off, so warn them first. I really, really appreciate his archive and archive CD. There is a tonne of stuff other than just the daily articles - they go back over 5 years! Thousand of articles - basically a searchable preppers encyclopedia. BTW the gold and silver is because you may not be able to exactly match what you need with someone who has it, AND who wantes something of yours in exchange. It's been recognized as wealth for centuries, and cannot easily be faked or inflated away. If you have a bumper crop of apples, onions, potatoes, wahtever, would you trade it for something or would you let it go to waste? An IOU would serve the same purpose, as long as all the parties were very, very trustworthy. Anyways, the author repeatedly states that silver should be last on the list of priorities.

The other very, very good resource for introducing new preppers is Chris Martensen's site: chrismartenson.com

His "Crash Course" is a great starter, and the "What Should I Do" page: (chrismartenson.com/page/what-should-i-do) is an excellent, rational, analytical reason and how-to to prepare for hard times or emergencies.
Check them out.

Evenin',

With so many new faces on this Forum, I thought it was time to get this thread back to the top of the pile for a day or so.

If you are new to prepping the survival blog site is worth a visit.

Cheers,

Mountainman.

Thanks all, for sharing this info. Alot I have already read... the rest I will. excellent material. But it is all scary... just the idea that, what we prep for - may actually really happen... that is scary stuff! It is great to see so many of you on here, and to go through some of these sites, and find what would appear to be pretty normal people, thinking and acting and doing some of the same things as myself. Because sometimes I think maybe.... I'm a little crazy for having started down this rabbit hole.

Howdy,

Those new to prepping might want to click over to Mr. Rawles blog and have a read. Lots of excellent information over there.

I'm glad to see others feel the way I do sometimes (like a madhatter). I know that UPS guy was dying to ask why exactly I needed MRE's. It was kind of fun not to satisfy his curiousity. I do get looks for buying things in fours- for the four BOB's.

I am also a long time reader of survivalblog.com. It's one of my first stops every morning. When I go on holidays I enjoy coming home to 4 or 5 days of catching up. I have also purchased and read all of his books and highly recommend them for entertainment and information. His newest book is on my Christmas list.

Duffman,

After reading a Rawles book, I was introduced. I visit when I can, but I am not as loyal as some.

Cheers,

Mountainman.
