"Scary thought... What we prep for may actually happen!"

Forgive me, but there is no point to prepping for something that will never happen! Or is there?

Most scenarios are very possible, some improbable, and only a few in my opinion are impossible. But you'd be extremely foolish to ignore an alien invasion, or time traveling cyborgs from the future, or other ridiculous scenarios such as a Zombie Apocalypse. But think of it this way... it's one of the best scenarios on the planet to use an an excuse for prepping. You're colleagues, friends and family won't think you're a paranoid hill-billie gun toting psycho whack job... they'll just think you watched to much TV and they will laugh at you. But when the zombies rise who gets the last laugh? Many of my colleagues actually say that WTSHTF they will be coming to my house... we'll see how far my charity extends when the time comes.

Do yourselves all a favor. Get educated, and be prepared to survive the uncertainty of the near future…

I enjoy survivalblog and I have written in several articles that did get published (thank you, thank you).
My personal feeling is that it is a little scary honestly. The information is great, no question about that, and he is meticulous about your sources and having everything cited properly.
The scary part is the actual information and what the predicted end result is. He foresees "The end of the world as we know it" or "TEOTWAWKI" for short. This means the destruction of America as it is known to us, massive deflation, starvation, civil war, pure nightmare stuff. I cannot dream up anything scarier than that.
For that reason I have to gently disagree on his very informative and accurately cited blog being "Not Scary" for it is the stuff that true nightmares are made of.

If your home library contains more volumes about survival-related topics than your local public library, you might be a prepper.

Faraday,

The scary referred to, was not the possible end of the world but compared to other websites, such as: get off the x dot com. Most folks find Get Off The X a very scary source of information. The site can be very intimidating, especially to new preppers. Of course, Get Off The X, is not meant for brand new preppers, more preppers who are looking to expand their knowledge.

So, it was too scary.

Cheers,

Mountainman.

I've had survivalblog. com on my desktop for at least a year. I visit the site daily. For me, JWR is a must read. Also, get his books, Patriots and Survivor, you'll regret not having read them before.

I'm a lurker there as well as other places. I finally got a copy of "Patriots" in a little bookshop 40 minutes from home, but can't get the next two as apparently they are not available here.....damn, damn, damn 😥

Bump!

Lots of new names on here, time to bump this back to the top for those who have just joined us. Rawles website has a wealth of information and knowledge. Many preppers find his site worth visiting from time-to-time.

Cheers,

Mountainman.

I would dare say that Mr. Rawles has probably forgot more prepping information than I have gleaned. He goes into scenarios that I have not even thought of. I am glad to say he was an influence in my decision to relocate and so far I'm loving it. While I dedicate about 25% of my reading to prepping material I couldn't hope to read all of the information on http://www.survivalblog.com/ in the next couple of years. All the same if you pick and choose what you read it will provide a lot of information, some that you know and a lot that you don't.

I have read the two fictional books from JWR. I do question though the whole gold and silver aspect that he really focuses on. If I have something for barter if/when the SHTF, I do not see myself ever accepting coins for trade. I am going to want something I can drink, eat, shoot, SURVIVE! Them coins are not going to feel very good or comforting if I am starving, thirsty, freezing, etc. Perhaps a WAYS down the road it might come in a bit handy and make me wealthy, but I do this so my family and I will survive. Beyond that I truely did enjoy his books and I think there is some good info in there, I guess I just hope that it never gets as bad as what he protrays.

When fiat currency ( the bills in your wallet & bank account ) crashes, when not if, precious metals will still have value. It will still be money when SHTF. Perhaps not immediately but when the economy recovers to some extent, (weeks or perhaps months later) an ounce of silver will be easier to transport than 10, 1lb loaves of bread for trade. You might trade a 1/4 of a deer for a few ounces of silver then exchange the silver for boxes of cartridges for your rifle in another town. Either way it's far easier to pack along than either item you are trading if you are not getting goods locally.

Simply point me at evidence of an extended period (post stone age) of time where precious metals had no value while fiat currency had value and I'll just shut up about it.
