I have recently rendered a gallon or so of bear tallow and am looking for a good recipe to make some soap with it. I have found some stuff on google but not anything that i am happy with. If anyone has any input I would appreciate it.
Thanks DV
For what it is worth, your main catalyst will be lye and in its costic form. You may want to know how much soap you want to make and then using a grid pattern of wood, you will size the slabs according to the amount of bars you want to make. I usually make 1 foot squares but cut half of that away with a one by four and a non stick backing on the floor. There are many essence that you can use but the natural oil and herb seems to be the favourite with hunters as it does not scare away game. You can find it on the Hunters web site and vast craft store sites. Knowing the proper measurements can be found on these same sites and using SAJE ESSENTIAL OILS and Coloring will add for to your product. It takes about a week to set and then using your boards simply remove and cut accordingly to the size you want. Hope that helps! Remember you will be making aa wet mix first and then pouring into slabs or old unwanted small bread pans.
Hi, I get mine from Home Hardware, Its been awhile since I bought some but at the last time it was 'Gillett's 100% Lye, that is where I would start the looking if I wanted to get some more in the house.
