So purchased a travel trailer to accommodate all 6 of us and all needed gear for all occasions. If we didn't have it we tried to make something similar and work with it or go without. But even with all the preparedness and stalking piling. The kids were the hardest to accommodate. The teenagers were bored since I cut all communication devices off unless an emergency arose. So they were going through social media withdrawal. As much as we were outside as possible exploring and learning about our new surroundings, when nasty weather comes they're inside. Which makes for miserable little children full of energy.
We moved location often every two days was a new place. No comfy campgrounds or amenities, just what we brought. I do believe after three weeks coming from mission bc, going through southern bc to southern Alberta to northern Alberta over to northern bc and back to mission, was a trial to see what it really takes and where improvement is needed.
At this point I'm thinking a travel trailer would have to be temporary. Used long enough to get to a long term place. To haul necessary gear and food. To live comfortably enough while heading to a permanent destination.
Just my two cents.
Our plan is to Bug in. Until we can no longer stay. Then, if possible, we would use our 14x7 enclosed trailer as a bug out BUNKER. Won't hold everything, but we can sure get out of Dodge with it. Surprising amount of room in it for food stores, Water, and Hammocks for night time. Dual axle will ensure we never have to worry about too much weight in it. We don't have any kids, just 5 cats. That reminds me, Gotta make a Bug out Scratching Post. HA

mammabearof5 - I wonder if your kids have gone camping before? Might it have been wise to take them to a provincial park or something similar and acclimatize them (so-to-speak) to the trailer and camping and no cell phones 🙂 first? Having your kids on board is going to make the world of difference in how well it goes. We have always camped and hiked as a family and made it our goal that everyone participated and had fun. They are all lifelong campers now and die-hard Thanksgiving Campers. We traveled across Canada one summer for 6 weeks and it was one of the best experiences we ever had together. By the end of the trip we worked as a precision team putting up and taking down the trailer and packing up. We could do it in record time and made a game of seeing if we could beat our last record 🙂 My kids were between 10 and 16 at the time.
If at first you don't succeed - try try again 🙂 Don't give up!

Thanks Anitapreciouspearl.
We've done camping before but for us its usually a week at go. This time was for 3 weeks.....and no social media. The littler kids loved it but the teenagers were no very accepting. Eventually everyone was on board with hiking and exploring. And while going through various towns found fun things to do to, some free and some not but educational and fun. I wanted to see how long it would take to be finished with traveling and camping. What I may need to do differently, to make it possible if necessary.
