Just thought I would start a thread to see if people have taken or are going to be taking the firearms course?
We will need to use weapons to hunt when the time comes and going to a range or gun club can help hone those skills.

Yes, the CFSC ( Canadian Firearms Safety Course) was one of the first preps I ever took, and I did it when I was a young(er) pup. Though it has changed considerably over the years, an EXCELLENT program for everyone.
And shooting practice is wonderful therapy:D!

I took the course about 6 years ago. I took my restricted license at the same time -was cheaper to do both non and restricted back to back. Agreed going to the range is great!

Can you give us folks that are 'gunless in Gimli' (I'm not in Gimli, it just has a nice ring to it. 😳 ) an idea of how much it costs to get take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course? Who would we contact in our locales?

My dad and I joined the Cold Lake Gun Club about 35 years ago, I got a few badges in the prone shooting with 22 rifle and standing with a 22 hand gun. It felt "lame" because it was with one arm, seemed unrealistic, merely sport. Anyways, much to my dad's disappointment I met my future husband and lost interest in shooting. 🙁

Give Island Outfitters a call and see who is currently offering the PAL course. Ask for Lucky I think. I forget who I took my course through. I used to shoot at the Victoria Fish and Game up on the Malahat and they would definitely know as well. I took this cool Police Pistol Combat course there as well and it was an awesome way to get into revolver sport shooting. You didn't even need to be licensed to take the 2 day course. I highly recommend it.
Be sure to specify when you sign up for the PAL course whether or not you want to just get your 'non-restricted' (rifles and shotguns) or take both your 'non-restricted' and your 'restricted' (pistols). It was only another 60 bucks i think to include the restricted as well as the non which was cheaper than doing them at different times.

or here,

I took both my restricted and non-restricted course at the same time. In the mid '90s I was on a military shooting competition team and the team officer worked a deal with a firearms instructor to get us the civilian course for $25.00 each. I'm now retired and working at a commercial range as a safety supervisor and coach. Now I get to practice all the time for free.

I have both permits. I did not take any courses, just challenged the exams. Not too difficult.

I have, however, fairly extensive experience with firearms.

😯 😯 SORRY MY FIRST POST IS OF A "bad news" STORY,BUT WOOKIE REPORTS THAT LUCKY IS OFFERING THE CFAC COURSE IN VICTORIA. LUCKY WAS THE MANAGER OF ISLAND OUTFITTERS UNTIL HE WAS ARRESTED THIS WEEK FOR STEALING AT LEAST 159 ASSORTED RESTRICTED AND NON RESTRICTED FIREARMS ALONG WITH OTHER SPORTING GOODS FROM ISLAND OUTFITTERS OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS. GOOGLE victoria sporting goods store manager arrested. SEEMS LUCKYS LUCK RAN OUT. NOW THE VPD IS TRYING TO SAY IT WAS THE LONG GUN REGISTRY THAT AIDED THEM IN CATCHING LUCKY!!!!!!!!!! AND HOW DID IT DO THAT. ANYWAYS, LOOKS LIKE A GREAT SIGHT. HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN SHOOTING SPORTS FOR ALMOST 60 YEARS. SHOOT BLACK POWDER SHOTGUNS RIFLES AND RESTRICTED FIREARMS. HAVE HAD A BOB SINCE MY DAD AND GRANDAD FIRST PUT THEM TOGETHER IN THE EARLY 60S. BE PREPAIRED. N.N.

That's too bad about Lucky! That's a lot of guns! How did he think he was going to get away with something like that!? Crazy.

I'm planning on taking the courses 🙂 Is there a CFSC location in or around the Fraser Valley?

I would suggest that anyone interested in firearms, take the course and take your restricted at the same time. easier to do both at the same time(even if you have no interest in handguns or restricted rifles). instructers make sure you know how to handle firearms properly and you are pretty well assured to pass. remember KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!!!!! if the libs or ndp ever get back into power in OTTAWA, i am sure it will become very difficult to get a licence. join a local club. even if you have not taken the C.O.R.E. course to get your b.c. hunters # and hunting licence, you can still prove that you are a legit target shooter.

I got both, it's definitely worth getting both. Even if you think you will only want long arms for hunting, pistols are super fun to shoot. 😀
