I think hitting a melon at 500m is a lot more difficult than many would think. Perhaps with years of practice, range finder, or the ability to read mildots in a scope and handloads. 300m is a hard range to get a good group off of a solid rest even. My .308 will usually put holes on top of eachother at 100yds if I don't screw up, but at 300 with factory ammo I have a hard time keeping a group under 10"....so add another 200m to that and we're talking a 15" plus group.... I just got reloading gear, i'm loading for 45/70 now and will start messing with 308 soon. 😉

Its not as difficult as you think with the correct training.

Training wasn't mentioned....lol It was alluded to that someone could get their PAL, get a Remington 700, practice, and start popping melons at 500m. I'm just saying it's not as easy as the movies might make it. 😉

Not all Rem 700s are built the same. Same with ammunition. And then, the big money..... the optics. Unless of course you are trying to hit a melon at 500 yards with iron sights. LOL

No, but I have trained regular civilians to reach out to 500m and hit a practice golf ball on the first round.

..... but the golf ball uprising of 1956 was suppressed with a mere putter.

Seriously guys, the training is out there to be had. If you don't have the skills to make the hits at distance at a range, you'll have no chance of making them when the chips are down.

The example of tagging a golf ball at 500m is to illustrate what a novice shooter can do with 500rds and sixteen hours of good training.

But hey, if you want to make fun, fill your boots. I know what my students can do.

I doubt many of us could tag a gulfball at 500 m, but then I never plan on shooting that far. As a hunter, I cannot guarantee a clean kill. Animals can move enough between the time of the thought to "squeeze" and the strike(plus other variances such as windage, MOA,shakiness, and miscalculations) that stalking closer would eliminate. In a defensive situation, most folks wouldn't be a threat that far away and that line between murderer and self defense would likely be crossed(unless they were already shooting). It's good to know your limits but your weapon should be sighted for the distance best suited for the game being hunted, while allowing some room for human error due to excitement of the moment.
