i'm currently in winnipeg manitoba. i'm selling my house here and i'm looking to start over again fresh somewhere in bc. i've been looking online and have seen a couple web sites that have shown people with float homes around powell river and around tofino. i've been looking into these but i can't find a lot of current info on these. can you just go somewhere and build one or do you need a permit, etc..any info would be greatly appreciated. also if someone knows if there are any float home communities around, that would be great also.
i've never been in bc so i don't know the area at all. i was thinking about starting out in port alberni. if anyone has any ideas on where to go, what to do, that kind of thing, please post ideas. just looking for some ideas. i'm a certified welder in manitoba and have also done lots of woodworking too.(framing, cabinets, milling, etc..) looking for a cheap place to start over again.

Hey!

Not a west coast expert by any means....

I would say Powell river, requiring two ferries to get there, would be a tad isolated and expensive to work in. Not sure about the float community. Lots of crown land though.

Tofino is heavily dependent on tourism, with associated prices. Geographically limited in town, and windy highway (past Alberni) to get there. There is lots of wide open oceanfront north of town though.

Alberni has lower prices, due to the depressed economy there. Lots of cheap acreages to be had. Waterfront is at a premium in town, though. The inlet is very busy, all summer long, not offering much privacy if your looking for a floating doomstead.

Just my .02

Thanks for the reply. Like i said i've never been out there at all so any info at all is greatly appeciated. I'd like to get off the grid a ways so the inlet would be out of the question. Greatly appeciate the info though, it sure helps. Thanks again.

No worries! Welcome to the forum.

I think if you do two more posts your PMs will work too.
