I've noticed this too, and in another one of his threads, I called for the end of the political rambling.

Hey Fellow Perppers.
I am a gun owner. Registered and not registered.
My personal view is that as a scociety of concern, that maybe with all the shit that has been happening to the inocent in schools and the growing violence in the criminal world that just maybe gun owners should vollunteer for psycholigical evaluation periodicaly. Yes I know that the nut cases out there aren't going to doit, and yes the criminals can get guns with out a licence. But as responsible gun owners we could take a lot of the heat off our backs by making a gesture. We have to show that there are responsable gun owners out there not just the wack jobs, nut cases and paranoids. Hope you can see where I'm coming from.

Be Prepared or it's your own fault.
Who pays for the evaluation? Is every gun owner prepared to spend the money on such an evaluation? I understand where you are coming from Grumpy but there should not be heat in the first place. Why is it up to gun owners to call uncle every time?

Maybe the money saved by scrapping the gun registry could be used for this.
Except in Quebec that is...where we still have to register our long guns!
I would support the idea of re licencing every 2 years...meaning a safety exam, and background check.
I strongly disagree with this suggestion. If this is proposed and agreed to... who then decides the criteria to say who is "sane" enough ? What about auto licensing. Why don't we voluntarily submit blood samples to the government to ensure we aren't taking drugs or drinking to excess. We have laws in this country. We have the assumption of innocence until proven guilty. Once you make a "gesture"... they will want another one... then another one...until there is no need for the gesture. They will get exactly what they want. We will be able to stand there and say we have the moral high ground because we volunteered for this? Why not just volunteer to hand in your firearms now and save the time and effort. WAY BAD IDEA !!!!!!!!
JAB
Denob, keep that every 2 yr re-license idea in Quebec along with your registry. I thought it was funny how someone in Quebec had to handle every piece of registry paper generated in that province before it went into the national database. Figured it was another La Belle province cash grab. Turns out it was to keep control of the guns. Back when the registry was started, Alberta went to court to stop it. SCOC said sorry, that firearms law was strictly federal purview. Quecbec applauded. Many years later Quebec is arguing for the registry, not sure why since it is still sole domain of feds. Feds are looking at increasing permit time to ten years. Great idea.
As far as volunteering for psychological testing for gun ownership to appease people. WTF have you been smoking Grumpy?
Sorry to those who dissagree with me, That is one of the freedoms we have that we are aloud to dissagree. I stand on my belief that as resposible Firearms owners that we are going to have to find a way to apease the majority of people who are scared shitless of us who own fire arms. The media already paints preppers a part of the wack jobs. The sooner they take that series off of the National Geographic station the better. Yes I know sure some people just might get the message about prepping at the cost of the rest of us being thought as patanoids. Oh and I don't drink very often and I don't smoke any thing.
Be safe, Be ready and peace be with you all.
Be Prepared or it's your own fault.
Should have psych tests to buy gasoline to since a crazy nutbag can set a house/city on fire. The only reason a test would be necessary is if someone was to use the weapon in a violent manner. Everything that can be used in a violent manner should require a test then. Cars/weed wackers/ chain saws and lets not forget piano wire! Guns are as much a whipping boy to violence as cigarettes are to health.
maybe gun owners should vollunteer for psycholigical evaluation periodicaly.
Absolutely not! We have already proven ourselves to be competent by passing a safety course.
You are now expected to act responsibly. If your further actions indicate you aren't responsible then you have violated the terms and could be subject to the loss of those rights.
I have to make a comment as I see some real errors in judgment being made here particularly related to firearms ownership in Canada. Firstly Canadian gun acquisition, ownership and storage laws are FAR superior to those of the US. There is a balance of freedom and responsibility vs. hazards and menace. The population fall into two categories those for further gun control and those against. Considering that there is already adequate control those in the latter category would prefer something close to a total ban on all firearms ownership by members of the general public.
I sincerely doubt that any amount of discussion would change the mind of anyone on either side of the argument. To give up ANY rights to appease a philosophically opposed group whether it be concerning gun control or any other matter would be completely foolish. The opposing group is diametrically opposed and will not change their point of view. They will accept the gesture of appeasement and with a "win" under their belt continue to crusade with even more furry until finally they get their way. There are lots of historical examples of this.
One of the problems in this is the lack of education in the subject of many of those that oppose firearms. They do not understand what hoops you have to go through to acquire, store and retain firearms. When a crime is committed with a firearm the masses assume that is because of lax restrictions. When the tragedy is hyped up in the press many jump on the bandwagon to band weapons and prevent further tragedies. If only it was that simple.
It is up to those of us who have a firearms certificate to educate people to understand that licensed firearms are owned, stored and maintain by responsible people. That they are used for legitimate purposes and that they are not a threat to society. That Canadian laws are extensive and already protect the population. That the situation in the US is different from here.
If we descend down the route of the UK or Australia it would be a sad day for Canada and an even sadder day for personal freedom.
