What I started doing is reading news articles outloud to my wife. She's slowly starting to come around. Now I have a $75.00 weekly budget from her. She still doesn't know about the other money I funnel off for preps. She doesn't much like guns but since I teach at a gun range she doesn't say much. My wife does agree about food storage though (as long as I do it a little at a time). Because she knows how much it would cost to get power lines to our cabin, she's willing to go along with alternative energy sources. But until TSHTF, it would be worth my life to suggest canning or gardening. I once suggested storing seeds, just in case, and I was promptly shot down, so she doesn't know about those either.
I might have to buy some tinfoil to make a hat while she lives in the "real world". As for camping, when we bought our cabin she vowed never to sleep in a tent again. If it happens that we can't drive to our cabin when TSHTF then I guess she'll get a little chilly on the 6 day hike to get there.
All in all, whether your spouse is in line with your preps or not, when TSHTF, she'll come around.

Hi Armories!
We are third floor as well... and will be onto getting the balcony garden going this month. We had planned to get onto that sooner until the rainy season set in...
*I really liked the roll-out emergency ladder suggestion and have bumped that to the top of my list.
I am more of a prepper then he though he is starting to show signs of coming right over to the dark side these days! 😉
His interest in it has been more fit and spurt with strong aspects of procrastination where I have been at it steadily for quite some time. But the other day when he thought we were out French's Bold Deli Mustard and tomato paste and I told him which closet/tote he could locate more ( both bought on a hot sale and in multiples) he was quite pleased with that and it has appealed to his love of thrift. This launched into a conversation about medicinal herbs and spices, home remedies, gardening etc and he was quite surprised at the learning I have done in this area, so he getting more inspired and involved.
Our medical bag had outgrown it's previous container so he is currently re-designing/weather-proofing an old-school leather suitcase that will better accommodate the supplies. But the debate rages on as to whether we could make a mini rocket stove out of a #10 can, I think it can be done and won't rest till I try it! ( I will post the results- for good or bad on the site, lol. )
End result, small projects that can be your wife's domain will probably help to get her more involved. It is a hard thing, you want to be prepared but not be a fear mongerer either. But life throws enough curve balls at all of us whether through economics, employment, illness or natural disasters...and here on the west coast we have that darn ring of fire thing to deal with ... it only makes sense to want to be as self-sufficient as possible.
The way I put it to my kids once was that I didn't want to be hanging out with the throngs at an overcrowded evac center if we have a big trembler. Both agreed ... it feels better to help yourself if you can.
When I was growing up we didn't call it prepping, it was self sufficiency and thrift, putting away - but these days with the current economic climate and global issues, who cares what it is called, as long as we are doing it!
paintergirl It's not called self-sufficiency or thrift. It's called prepping or survivalism. I have to think that way if I want an excuse to keep wearing my tinfoil hat. 😆
Those who are unwilling to defend freedom, will become unfree.
Hoping for the best.
Hey FV, i'm single but all my friends have a good laugh whenever i bring up the MegaQuake..the topic then always shift over to orgasms!LOL! Best reply i can get is that "Oh well, if it happens , it happens".
I guess you could ask your friends "So which evac centre are you planning to camp at?" - Not too many people want to go there unless they truly have no other option ...that and essential services will be struggling to figure out what is going on to so who knows how long before even something basic is set up. True, if it happens, it happens ... but I definitely prefer to be as self-sufficient as possible, even some basic skills can help someone limp through. Hurricane Katrina and Japan were just 2 of the many nightmare scenarios we have witnessed live on TV. My hats off to Japan, they were a truly a picture of dignity and grace under the most horrific circumstances!
Haha, in the event that I need to leave my 'home base', then squatting is our plan as well.
Now here's a tangent - anyone married, who's significant other either isn't really into it, or you find it as a source of contention? I feel my wife really dosn't take anything I have to say about the topic seriously, and often we end up arguing priorities when I want to keep the tank topped up but she wants a new scent for the bathroom candles and there isn't always money for both...
my girl is the same way, shes aware of the world's current finincial situation, just isnt really intrested or sees a point to prepping, i know she thinks im nuts, but shes to nice to say it to me. anyone have any ideas on how to get you signifignant other on board the prepper/survivalist train?

I have to agree I'm pretty much in the same position on this one
Maxpower -"anyone have any ideas on how to get you signifignant other on board the prepper/survivalist train?"
Not untill they are in a situation where they have to decide whats important them..
Hey guys,
I am a journalist in Vancouver researching the growing prepper movement and I have some economic experts say some compelling stuff on record about how the economies of the world are in peril and may be on the verge of collapse.
I am looking to spread this information to the public with a full-length magazine article, but it would be great if I could interview one of you as well.
This would help spread the word get more people talking about the prepper/survivalist movement, as I am giving it a fully balanced and realistic perspective on how we are living in fragile times......
Please let me know if some one is interested in telling their story on why they are preparing. Even a quick phone interview would be great.
You can reach me at jared_jg (at) hotmail.com
Thanks!

Richmond is surround by dikes , below sea level.. likely hood in the Inevitable Earthquake..massive Flooding & Reclaimed land becoming unstable..I back up plan would be smart..Prepping and taking care of yourself is your responsibility. Its like safety Procedure in commercial air travel.. Put your air mask on before trying to save others or family members . good luck
Tell that to my friends!
