Squatting can only successfully done in places no one else has access too. Like anywhere you can drive a car (especially around high density areas, like near city's). Camper is a good idea, or pick up with a canopy, good ole' station wagon. Really if the shtf who's really gonna care you 'owns' the land. It's good to have a mobile camp. Car, boat, whatever...

Hi guys I'm new here, I live in surrey with my family (wife and two kids ) my wife and I share a common thought, that being prepared never hurts. I don't have the financial means to be a hardcore prepper( a young family will do that) but my wife and I have slowly over the course of the past year started to collect some of the basics( camping gear, batteries, firearms etc) if shtf tomorrow, getting out of the lower mainland would be a real pain in the ass. Anyways just wanted to say hi and I look forward to discussing the many topics of prepping.

Hi, febmurph
Welcome to the forum, and to prepping.
Yeah, I'm not hardcore either. Prepper-Lite, that's me.
There's lots of interesting stuff here, see you around the water cooler.
🙂

Hi febmurph,
Prepper-Lite! I like that! But really, if the 9.0 comes doesn't matter how much $ you've spent, if you got to bail you'll be Lite for sure! I have a young family as well. Makes it hard to justify buying a case of ammo when you actually need a case of diapers!

Hi guys, yah I agree, prepper-lite. If I had the money and a chunk of land around kamloops then I could go all out, but like wookie said young family means doing things on the lite side. But I do manage to grab a box of ammo almost every payday!!! Good to talk to others about this topic though and share ideas

Hi Jesse,
I'm also in the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford area. I love that 'Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.' It sounds like you're having a lot of fun, in the process of preparing for hard times. I've only been prepping for a few months, and I've never been part of any forum of any kind before. I hope in the process of prepping for me and my family, I can keep a level head, and enjoy the journey as you are. With regard to your wife and the priorities of bathroom scents--------remember-if mama ain't happy------. Keep the focus, but smell the roses.

Edbaron, right on! It seems like people still aren't quite into having any form of a physical prepper community. This could include things like having some form of a joint plan for evacuation, skill or resource sharing, community gardening, and all sorts of things like that!
Hopefully with another Abby resident around we can share some brilliant ideas and possibly even share or trade skills and resources!
Welcome to the forums

Don't know if anyone reads these on a consistent basis as the replies and time lapses between replies seem pretty scattered. But there are also good reasons for this as a serious prepper isn't going to reveal all in a public posting where they could be marked for targeting. I live in the Cariboo. Six years ago I lived in Victoria, and loved it there as I am an avid gardener. Took me five years to get my soil to a reasonable quality, but have loved the challenge.

I admire those who live below the Fraser Canyon (this includes all the islands) and have begun preparing. Have to start with a first step. But in a real disaster, (financial meltdown, terrorist bombing of water or transportation system, biological attack, earthquake) those in the lower mainland below Cache Creek are mostly not going to make it. Most who make it as far as the Fraser Canyon will be trapped there in the bottleneck. Even the bush around Hope is unsafe because the area will be overrun by thousands of initial survivors although Hope has the advantage of higher elevation.

Prep quality of life is important, both before, during and after the disaster. I have raised cows, chickens, turkeys, and horses (hearkening back to my childhood on a farm), but have gotten rid of all animals except the horses because livestock ties you down on a daily basis. Kept the horses because they are needed here for off road travel. 80%of our protein comes from salmon, deer and moose. We can our garden surplus or trade for firewood. It is amazing how little land it takes to raise a huge quantity of food. Fishing, camping, etc. abound here. One can survive comfortably on relatively little cash.

I believe that those who are reluctant to make the plunge because of a sense of financial insecurity can find an opportunity. Networking is the key to the next step. One can start mortgage free. Find five or six people to communicate with, establish a likely scenario for a "safe" place to go and begin plans to get there before you need to be there. If you live in the dangerous large low lying population centers and NEED to get out it will already be too late. I have to admit some of my own family believe I am hyperventilating when I tell them what I believe is coming. Some agree intellectually, but have taken an ostrich approach. Oh well, I am too old and hardened too worry. My prediction that we have a two year window at most will not leave us in suspense too long. Hope I'm wrong!!!!

Will communicate via email on further personal details dandzen8@yahoo.ca. Good luck to everyone.

Hey Chilcotin
I spent a summer on the Chilco river, camping , hunting. Such a beautiful area. I admire your choice of where to live! Yes I live on the island, but I do work on boats, so I must:) Cheers!

A boat is such a great escape vehicle, sail directly across to Bella Coola. Great area, the Island. So much great farm land, and other resources. Good base from which to set up trade with the Interior.

to answer your question about talking to your wife i too have the same problem the thing i said to her was if the power goes out and your in the dark what will you do for the 2hours to maybe 4 days or because we have little kids ages 2,3,and 4 i used them as an example and said how would you take care of them if you dont have anything prepared because look at katrina when it hit what was it like 5000 died of starvation in the first week

Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it
