This is going to sound counter-intuitive.
Why couldn't I stay isolated instead of bugging out? I mean, I live in a pretty lush environment and it's just as hard to get here as to leave. So why not head for the mountain, and hike inland? Perhaps find a good BIL (Bug IN Location) into which to bring trusted allies?
Of course, this is all assuming when the SHTF it's civil unrest or the like, causing Military blockades etc...
Thoughts? Suggestions? Rude remarks phrased politely?

I think you have it right, just not the terms. 😉
Bugging in is when you plan to stay where you are, and anytime you plan to leave where you are, you are by definition bugging out. But yeah, out in Gibsons you shouldn't have to go far to find someplace good to bug out to - but there are probably more than a few folks thinking the same thing!
I really only meant the term as a contrast to going hours or even days away to reach a secure location.
I had originally planned to ahem borrow an aircraft and leave for a remote location. But seriously, I'm already remote. I might still acquire an aircraft, since it would be obscenely handy in the even I have to bug out from my spot, but I don't think I should consider leaving the primary option.

Our game plan is to stay put, until the time comes when it is no longer safe, or feasible to stay. Most of my provisions are here, and I am comfortable at my main residence. It is also easier to defend, home turf. Bugging out is an option, should the dwelling become compromised. Then, Plan B may kick in - If I have to leave, do i go to a friend's house? or a Bug Out Location like a cabin. IF you have a cabin. Should you cache food and supplies at a friend's house, or, in a secluded spot where you have buried them. How much of my stuff can I carry? is a Bug out Bag the only thing I can take? Should I cram my vehicle full of stuff and head out with what it can carry? Got Gas? How far can you get when nothing is open and you have 1/2 a tank of gas? Plan C could end up being - Head for the hills, on foot, bike, or as far as the vehicle will take us. if you aren't fast enough there may be curfews, and road blocks in place and staying put will be the only option. Do you try to bug out on your own? Or in an organized group for mutual support?
There are so many variables, contingencies, options, and dangers to every decision. You almost need to have a variety of plans in place. I believe the more people you know who are like-minded, the better your chances of mutual support. This forum is a great place to find them.
Just my 2 cents worth.

You've Got To Be Tough, If You're Going To Be Stupid.
I have considered moving to the sunshine coast just so I would have less chance of being in a situation in need to bug out .
Thanks for the thought process Preppersaurus! I tend to think of about 2/3 of those things at a time, and forget the rest :P.
Syn, the coast isn't for the faint of heart. If you enjoy paying reasonable prices for anything, you're going to have a tough time living here. That said, the climate is forgiving, the scenery is breathtaking, and the people are friendly. Just do me a favour.... Drive the speed limit. Biggest pet peeve ever and second easiest way to earn my anger; drive noticeably slower than indicated speed limit.
As for less chance of needing to bug out, I'm not sure where the logic comes from. It isn't a city, so the chances of martial law or civil disturbance are extremely low. Natural disaster, however, is just as probable as in Vancouver. More so in some cases but as discussed above, I'm thinking the best bug-out would be up the mountain. Close to home/supplies if needed and without having to rely on a corporation to transport you to the mainland (misnomer). Ferry fares are steep though, so watch out.

Funny you would respond with that pet peeve , I am admittedly the slowest driver , not only that , I have the attitude that I am doing the rest of the world a favour by slowing them down : )
The peeve spawned from both my desire to always be on time, and my need (for work) to be prompt.
I don't mean to be rude, but driving isn't about leisure. Operating a vehicle is about doing a job. Whether that job is getting from point A to point B, or hauling gravel from a pit. The purpose of machines and devices, such as vehicles, is to make it more efficient. Slowing people down does no one any favours, it just promotes road rage and speeding and winds up causing more problems than it solves. Trust me, we've been having this battle with town hall for years. They took out the 2 lane each way main thouroughfare and replaced it with "traffic calming" single lane. More accidents, more anger, more tickets. Must have been bought out by the cops.
I'm trying not to rant, so I'll keep it simple. People expect the speed limit, and legally going slower is considered obstructing traffic. People have lives that don't involve sitting in a car going 30 kph in an 80 zone. Usually they include jobs and time sensitive work; so for the benefit of all, please stick to the posted speed limit.

Oh but I do the speed limit, it is the other 90% of the population that are speeding who pass me .
We moved out of Calgary to the 'burbs for reasons other than teotwawki but it has allowed us to prepare better for bugging in as well. The only thing that will make us move out is a total break down in society with hungry, angry mobs spreading out from Calgary after emp/cme, or a dirty bomb upwind. Bugging out is a decision that should not be taken lightly but if you live in a large metropolitan centre, you may have little choice.
I'm sure people envy your location!
HAMMER, you could slip into the PERSEPHONE and spend the day there, then after sundown, slip into the REACH for a snack. the back door is USUALLY unlocked until midnight. just saying.
LOL it's usually unlocked because there's a residence upstairs. And how do you know this Nick?!

I am glad you are still on this network, Hammer, I always enjoyed reading your posts. So many others who were on here last year seem to have left.
Oh, I'm around. Still sickeningly busy, but I do what I can. I wondered if you were still active.
