The Basic Qualification exam consists of 50 questions related to fundamental electronic theory and regulations pertaining to operating a station. The questions in the exam are selected from the Industry Canada question bank for the Basic Qualification license. The full question bank and answers can be downloaded as a PDF file at http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/vwapj/ric7.pdf/$FILE/ric7.pdf

The requirement for morse code was dropped several years ago so with a bit of study you should get through the exam with no problem.

If I can divert the current theme a bit ...

Several years ago I flew by float plane from Burns Lake to Princess Royal Island which is near the southern end of the Queen Charlotte's. What astounded me most was that there are literally thousands of islands of varying size once you get past the coast.

What caught my interest once I arrived at my destination, was a log-boom raft nestled in an inlet with a small trailer sitting on top. At the time I thought "what a neat idea" and it continues to stick in my mind to this day.

Given the vast number of islands along the coast, I'd really like opinions pro and con about setting up along the northern coast vs the interior.

please feel free to divert.... i've not given the northern coast much thought. But now that i think about it, im guessing there would be some fairly remote spots in those parts. Fishing would, or should be good, water is everwhere( need to purify it though, salt water!!) and if you can only get there by plane then in theory that limits the number of people with access. Not a bad idea, but, do you have a float plane or access to one?? just my two cents.......

I only have an aviation radio license, but the test is really easy. Just terminology. And etiquette. If anyone is looking for help in that department, I can provide some assistance 🙂

Hi OutAndAbout

More than likely you saw the caretakes living quarters for a aqua culture farm.
There are lots of old travel trailers and Atco portable buildings on rafts and small barges along the coast.
Some times you pick them up for a song you just have to go get them and remove them from the water lease.
They come up from time to time in the Boat Trader magazine and Buy and Sell.
I have been looking that way my self. Set up a wind and solar array with a inverter and a reverse osmosiss water maker.
you have power and fress water. Seems that a water lease (like a land lease) isn't all that exspensive so you could possibly get your own bay to your self. I'd look for one that goes inland a ways giving you more shelter from the elements and out of sight from Joe Public. Having a river running into the inlet would be good too, water sourse and perhaps a salmon run coming in once or twice a year.

My only problem would be getting Mrs. Old Scout to go there.

Actually, I was doing a medevac at the time, as I used to do such trips into areas only accessible by float plane. The area, for reasons unknown to me, was being logged and the trailer was a sleep shack for the crew working out there.

I've always had that scene in the back of my mind because with the thousands of little islands scattered along the coast between Prince Rupert and the lower mainland, a person could move themselves as near or as far from civilization as they wanted. Food would be a-plenty I would think, by dangling a hook. And there would be lots of unpopulated inlets around all these islands for shelter from storms.

As a side-note to that particular flight ... we crossed the coast mountain range from Tweedsmuir Park to the coast and I was looking at all the little lakes nestled in the valleys of that range. I commented to the pilot that it would be a great place to build a little cabin for the summer. The pilot told me that a person he knew tried it once. They built a log cabin by one of the little lakes that was accessible by air, and returned during the winter to discover they couldn't find the cabin anywhere. The GPS showed they were in the right area, but the cabin was no where to be found. Before leaving, they cut several trees off at snow level. The following summer, they returned to find the cabin totally flattened. Then looking for the trees they had cut the previous winter, they noticed that what they had cut at snow level during the winter was now thirty feet up in the air.

Not a fun topic to have to think about... but should SHTF ever happen, this is going to come up.

SHTF is not a fun topic. The video should be watched by everyone. Interesting approach and thought provoking. So what do we do in Northern Ontario where the bedrock is often barely a foot below?

ICRCC, thanks for the welcome back, that would be tough with bedrock a foot below your feet. To be honest, if i had to make that choice i would cremate during the night. Use the cover of darkness to hide the smoke plume. Yes there would be a rather large glow that would be visable for a few hundred meters( depending on how thick the bush is in northern ontario) but if digging just wasn't do-able.....you gotta do something right?? cant just make a pile at the end of the driveway and cover it with a tarp, right?? No quick fix for this one thats for sure....

No, definately not a fun topic. But a very real topic. He mentioned some things in this vid that I never thought of. Thanks for posting.

I had already pondered this question. The bush is very thick in my neck of the woods and the population is sparse however black bears are not. Now while that may solve one problem it would create another once the bears got a taste for human flesh. Regardless of my actions that may become a reality anyway. The black bear would then become a dangerous predator to be dealt with.

To prevent disease any bodies must be dealt with and dealt with in a respectful manner. Cremation is the only option in my location.
