Hi Duffmanprepper! Welcome. I'm from upper island. Hey how you going to build your boat in Vancouver?!
i'm going to be moving it over to the mainland and find a storage place in langley or surrey because my fiberglass distributor is in langley and its easier to get supplies there too so where up island are you and any advice for a newbie like things they should have first

welcome! you'll find tons of good info on here and lots of helpful people! One thing i do suggest first is starting a food storage and BOB's (bug out bags) to begin with! Have fun and once again welcome from another islander 😉

My advise is same as dandyprats, just starting to buy a little extra at the store to start food stores and save / find jugs to store water in. Then figure out what what you want in your emergengy/bug out bag(s). You have a large family to think of! Start with what you can afford/wife lets you spend! I'm in Campbell River! Yay islanders!
ok what should i have for protection i watch that show doomsdays preppers and it said to have so kind of protection should i start that to
and is there a list of stuff thats on here i can go by or just make up my own. i put a grab bag together a few days ago it has MRE's, water bottles flash lights, matches, trailmix and offer easy to get foods and thats it

Good job on the bags! as for a list you can find if you search around the internet but id say make your own. One that suits yourself but you can search around easily for a list. There are tons of good websites. Preparedness pro is probably one of my favorites, as a little suggestion =)
As for protection are you talking weaponry? for a BOB id suggest bear spray ( we have bears like a block away right now) so i put that in my bag if i did have to bug out. A few ( always have back ups) switch blades and if dont already and feel the need I'd look into getting an gun license and hunting license.
but when you first are starting do not overwhelm yourself. I know "the sooner the better when your a prepper" but make to do lists and just take one step at a time. but water/food and BOB's id put at the top of the list . =)

Duffmanprepper,
Welcome. Are still looking for suggestions?? I will assume you are willing to take a look at the odd website to get going. Here are a few that I hope will help. Of course, keep posting here - there are a lot of helpful preppers.

That should keep you going for a day or two. There are a couple more survival blogs worth seeing, but I don't have the URL's with me at the moment. Use google and youtube and you can find plenty of information. If you doubt the validity of the info, post a question on this site and someone will give you their opinion in short order.
My only suggestion on the gear you get: get the best gear you can afford, right now. In the future, upgrade. Hand down the old best gear to your kids bugout gear. Just my suggestion.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Hey duffman, personal protection can be expensive. I suggest starting with the basics. We don't live in America so we don't have to fear everyone and their dog packing a pistol and an AK-47. That show is extreme and I feel they really sensationalize the subject. But if you want to purchase a firearm then get your PAL and train yourself or I'd gladly take you shooting.
Duffman,
One thought on defensive options might include a compound bow or a compound crossbow. To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no paper work required for archery. Most locations in Canada will even allow you to hunt with a crossbow. Of course, post-event that won't matter. PSE or Diamond offer ready to hunt bow packages for less than $400, you only need to purchase arrows. The bows have sights, arrow rests, and quivers. You will want at least 50 pounds of draw weight and look for the lightest bow weight you can afford. If you want a more traditional looking bow, try to get a take-down recurve.
In addition, you will want to have a decent blade. Cold Steel. Gerber. Old Timer. Kabar. Mora. Glock. Kershaw. Buck. All these companies make a good knife. You will want a good folding lock blade (3" - 4" blade), a camp knife with a full tang fixed blade (4" - 6") and a good pair of folding pliers - SOG Para, Leatherman Wave or the Gerber 400 or Diesel. Get them as you can afford them. Later a heavy blade knife may be on your want list.
Firearms, are the one tool in your defensive inventory that can make a big impact on a comfrontation. However, without proper training and the correct mindset, having and using a firearm in that situation are two different things. If you can't or won't use it - don't have it. Find a different solution.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Good advice here mountain man. Another thing about bows, the sound of the shot doesn't give away your location or position for miles around
mountain man you are the man thank you so much those have helped alot
i love this site another thing i'm getting is the crovel from the doomdays prepper show its 100 $ but i think it will be worth it
