We found that digging the hole minimum six feet worked good for family of four. This was good for three years.
Best to make the thunder box cover of the drop hole as air tight as possible and a cover for the seat. Then externally vent the waste hole with a three to four inch wide pipe that goes a foot or two higher the the out house. This will help with the smell as the vent will draw the gasses out of the waste hole. Just like the out houses at Government campsite, they would work if Joe Idiot Public would close the lid when they finished. Oh and yes no windows that aren't covered with glass or clear plastic (keeps the bugs out)

Oh I forgot
Keep it as far away from your water source as possible.

Villiagers links show some innovative ideas, I must admit. I think this again goes along the government approved aspect of sanitation versus the roughing it camping concept I see when mentioning such things. I can understand going that route in a city environment where population is high and waste sites minimal.
A more permanent outhouse is how our ancestors resolved such and it's still pretty hard to beat. Building a garden away from the outhouse is also a good idea. I stated it in this order instead as I know my priorities... 😆

Seems we should all learn from the animal kingdom and just crap in the neighbours yard instead! 😮 😆

styrofoam insulation for the seat warms very fast. And you use the piece you cut out as a lid if you screw a board across. keeps smell down

And then what do you do with it? Put it down a hole?

What I mean is why not dig an outhouse pit to start with? Then put an outhouse (shed) over it. I don't want to be transporting poop from one place to another.

I think the Styrofoam idea is a great one and wonder why we never thought of it sooner...

Isn't all this container stuff designed to meet regulations set by higher population areas? I know many that still have outhouse in my region and never have I heard any mention against their use. Since this is cottage country, many cabins rely on them as septic fields are for those with running water. Since they haul the water, they stick with outhouses. I even know a guy who attached an outhouse to his cabin and calls it indoor plumbing. 😆 (He doesn't heat the crapper though).

Folks here even joke that they'll start picking up their dog's crap when the wolves do it first! We go through dog catcher's alot here too as no one wants to answer complaints when the whole town seems to have dogs. 😀

If you go with styrofoam insulation try the foil backed stuff.

put your outhouse on skids then you can drag it to your next hole when the first is full.

We used to just tie the outhouse to the back of the truck and pull it forward a few feet after the new hole is dug.(it easily fits between the wheels). Then the old hole is behind you and that is always good.... 😉

It may sound bad, but old outhouses used to be converted into smoke shacks for smoking your meats. They work quite well but do burn , so your firepot has to be well protected when doing this.

Biomass poo . We speak of dried cow patties for biomass fuel.

What about human poo dried out for burning as biomass fuel ?
