Hello one and all!
I stumbled across this site last night and wanted to share with you (If you didn't already have this idea.)
what I've been doing with my best friend for the past few months.
As we all know, dogs have been an incredible resource from the get go.
They are incredibly loyal companions and hunting buddy's.
For century's they have provided us with warmth, love and protection.
I don't know about you but as friendly as I am with fellow humans, I've found it hard to trust humans reliability...Keeping in mind that for a 20 year old it's hard to find people to take me seriously in my views and values of what life really looks like(or at least should look like.)
So before I babble on much farther I will get to the point.
My dog Tank and I have been training each other for the past year.
I picked him for a few quality's.
1) He's a mutt, half chocolate Lab and half Border Collie; In my short years on this earth I have found that the Heinz 47's live longer that pure-bred hound's and have Way less health problems.
I picked this mix for a couple reasons: labs are great swimmers and hunting dogs and Collies are energetic herders, both breeds are easily trained and learn very quickly.
2)He's not to big and he's not to small; Getting in to thick wooded land is a breeze and jumping a few feet is easy for him.
3) He was the one pup out of the litter that didn't come running with the rest of his siblings when they where called.
When seeing eye dog trainer's pick out the perfect pup, they will call the puppies and what ever one does not respond and keeps doing it's thing, is the one they most often pick.
The less distracted they are the better it is for you to get them to listen to YOU and you only.
All that being said, I bought him a back pack a few months ago...Well really more saddle bags than a back pack. For the first while I let him run around in the field with it strapped to him, but the real test was packing things in to it.
He now officially packs around: 2 first aid kits including CPR mask and oxygen mask and painkillers, non perishable food supplies(Including his own food.) A change of clothes for me and my man, batteries, candles, lighters,a flash light, his mutt-lucks,cards,kindling,fire paper, rope,a sewing kit, letherman, a map of BC, tackle and skinning knife.
He packs all this with ease.
I'm sure if I built him a sled to pull he would pull that to.
The pack that I speak of I purchased at our local outdoors store "Backcountry."
The best part is that it was made in Kamloops B.C
It's called "The wilderness wonderer."(That's the name of the site as well.)
I'm sure that if you put the time in to spend with your furry family that you to can have a pack hound to 😉
Just a thought.
Anyway, thank you for reading!
Happy trails everyone.
A good well trained dog is hard to beat for all the good things they can bring to the table, the one thing I would add to your list of things to work on training is "hump" aka teaching to pull on command, you just never know when having a dog help pull you out can be a lifesaver, and tracking is worth its weight in gold..

I totally agree!
In fact I have trained him to track and find grouse and antler sheds.
He also digs on command and "Find's" What ever I give him a scent for.
I've taught him lots of tricks and commands, but he's still young so I still have time to get more in to his head 🙂
My Dog's pack is from Outward Hound
