So Ive read several times that many pet anitbiotics are the same antibiotics for humans, they are just called something different. So I was wondering if anybody knows what is what? Things like Amoxicllan, and penisillan would be invaluable if the system collapsed. Ive heard that drugs will be one of the first shortages we would expierience. Not only is it good to have the drugs to treat yourself with, but they would also make a great barter item. Ideas?
I also heard that things like willow tree sap are pain killers if you rub it onthe area that hurts. Does anyone have more info on remedies like these?
Also dental care. Recently I had my two bottom wisdom teeth come in. While coming in they managed to destroy one of my molars. I was fortunate enough to have benefits and get these teeth removed. before removal I was in a crippling amount of pain. In a world where dentists are hard to come by, how would you deal with something like this? The teeth need to come out, or the nerves need to be killed so you can stop feeling the pain. Tooth pain is very crippling, one of the worst types of pain. Ive almost blacked out while expieriencing this and theres no way I could bug out, or hunt or fish while going through this. My problem is dealt with, but how would someone deal with these issues if heres no dentist around? Thanks in advance for any info.

Crippling tooth pain is one of the worst situations one can endure. And it can't be endured for long. Even as late as the middle of the 19th century it was the local blacksmith who pulled teeth, undoubtedly because he owned a pair of heavy duty forceps and was built like a brick wall. Brutal, but the teeth had to come out!! have a good supply of whiskey on hand for this procedure.
Either willow or aspen (poplar) bark have the same pain killing properties as aspirin. In the case of older aspen trees cut off the hard outer bark and use the thinner soft bark next to the wood. For quick relief the bark can be chewed, but is bitter the same way as chewing aspirin tablets is bitter. The soft bark can be boiled and the drink swallowed.
We use an old Native method of making an antibiotic cream using pitch gum boiled and then worked into animal fat or vaseline. If we have a wound on a horse we slather the site and the healing is rapid. In the case of sunburn or first degree burns it heals without leaving any scar and works rapidly. And it is free and does not develop antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Pitch is the tree's natural response to injury and prevention of infection.
Yarrow tea (made from the flowers which can be dried and stored) is the best flu remedy you can have in the house.
As for the vet meds, yes they work, but be careful to estimate your weight against the weight of the horse or dog they were meant for.
There is other knowledge about remedies that is useful to have tucked away in the backs of our minds. In the old days if a farmer cut himself with an axe he would send someone to the barn to collect a handful of cobwebs to stop the bleeding. For a long time this was believed to be an old wives tale and besides it sounds so disgustingly unsanitary. Recent studies have confirmed there is a scientific reason why this works. cobwebs are almost pure vitamin K the main clotting agent in blood.
An extract from wild strawberry plants will stop most diarrhea and in fact will constipate you if you go too far. Steep a tea from some leaves.
Calendula, that yellow-orange flower seen in many flower beds makes a wonderful essence in oil that softens skin. used in many soaps and creams. Pick a hundred blossoms or so, cover with vegetable oil (light olive oil is best) let sit in a sunny window for a month, remove the blossoms, and use as a skin conditioner. One of the most useful plants you can grow in a northern garden, very attractive like marigolds, bloom all season, the leaves are edible and useful in salads.
BUG Repellant: three parts cider vinegar, three parts water, and a quarter cup of lemon juice or any citric juice. You can solve half the problem from mosquitoes by wearing no perfume or after shave in the bush. mosquitoes love the smell. Do not wear dark clothing when mosquitoes are a problem.
To answer the antibiotic question, they aren't usually called anything different as far as I've found. Another antibiotic you might watch out for is clindamycin. It's used on pets as well, but it's useful for someone like me who has a severe allergy to both amoxycillin and penicillin.
That's all I can add for now as time is limited and so is internet 😛

When I was doing my radio show, there was a host couple named Dr. Bones & Nurse Amy.
They outlined the use of fish antibiotics...the blog article can be found here...

I haven't found a source here in Quebec, and was wondering if anyone else knew of a place that sells them.
I wonder if you could get veterinary antibiotics from a farmer who raises livestock or a friendly local veterinarian. They are the same as antibiotics used in Humans. You can research dosing and frequency as well as exactly what to use for what online. Drug allergies are something to be VERY careful about. Example if you have a penicillin allergy it would be wise to stay away from ALL penicillin type drugs unless you are known to be ok with some derivatives. As well Cephalosporin drugs are closely related to penicillin and can also cause reactions in those who are allergic to penicillin. Given the limited resources in a SHTF situation you don't want to have to be dealing with an anaphalactic reaction... it would almost certainly prove fatal without advanced medical care. Just some thoughts.
Thank you all for the wealth of information here theres a lot of good stuff in this post. Appreciate it.
I've seen these sitting on the shelf in The Country Store(the old Co-op stores).
That's in Ontario, dunno what they have out west but there must be something similar.
A general dentist is often referred to as a family dentist and he is skilled and trained to take care of most basic dental needs.

Worth noting that in ontario, some of those drugs on the farm stores, do need a farm number to buy and almost all of them are now recorded and they are keeping track of what you buy and how much and have all the lot numbers etc, they say to keep track of recalls but its all in a database.
As for the teeth, they got pulled, not nice but it had to be done..

for the antibiotics check online for the fish stores down in the states. you can order them online and have them shipped to a us shipping box for pickup. or when visiting the states just go by a fish supply store and pick them up without a priscription or farm license number.
Article that I just found and started to read. This is an unverified article for me, so read with caution.
