Has anyone noticed the increased interest in building and living in small houses. There is even a magazine out that has plans and shows homes built. What a nice simple, uncluttered, not being owned by stuff way to live. 😛

For the ones like me that is leaning to more of a lone wolf life and haven't already got something set up....I have my cabin....a small place like that would be the answer especially if it was on wheels you could move it any where and set up.

Have any of you seen the show on PBS called Alone in the Wilderness where this fellow goes out into the wildness in Alaska and builds himself a cabin and lives there I believe for 30 years. He is in a small cabin and has just the basics for tools and supplies. He didn't spend hours working for the man or cleaning and looking after a big home. Very rustic and simple that's the way to go. When he needs money he goes out and pans for gold....back then at $40 an ounce which buys him the supplies he needs.....now at $1200+ an ounce I wonder how much of the basic necessities that would cover. Wouldn't it be nice....sigh

enuff,...i totally agree with this trend , and hope the laws change to accommodate this flexible option for living anywhere,4-seasons, and not having all the equity tied up to land as changes come.
I hope to be building many of these myself , and have had one 29ft. tandem chassis sitting out in my garden for 5 years now....recently picked up a diesel which can tow it, so will finally start on it as i have the money for components.
The most important thing is the insulation for our winters. Most of this trend started in california, and of course, in that area, they can save space not insulating as thickly as we would require it. I already have 2`` foam panels i can adapt.

Garlowin....my property taxes are $100 and I don't have any debt...I pay cash for what I purchase so I think in that area I'm OK.

Villager - What a great business to work in and learn about. I think your skill and knowledge will always be in demand.

DH and I lived in a 12 ft by 24 foot cabin we built ourselves, over two summers. It was a wonderful experience for us, until DH's disability kicked in, and he could no longer climb the path uphill. We were pretty broke in those days, but our luck was with us when a friend offered us a 70's vintage double wide trailer. We had a look, and liked what we saw. Got it brought home soon after, and have been enjoying it ever since. Small homes are great for keeping the clutter down, but I had very little room for our preps.
