Hi Susannah

Very interesting reading on the wicking beds, I have to admit that its of interest to me, will talk to hubby about maybe doing a trail one, my mom has then but she bought fancy kits for her deck, they did seem to work very well for her but the amount of soil in each of her's is quite limited. I did build one of my hugel beds in a low spot that tended to get wet,and I have to admit that I feel the wood does a very good job of being the wick on that hot sun bed that I use to grow sqaush and melons in, I have used the pipes into the ground before but I used them as a way to get water into covered composting pits..which if I really think about is kinds of like a wicking feeding bed.. What book did I read that in.. The complete composting guide, I think.. they said to dig a pit, put a typical mix of composting pile in the pit, put a pipe down and into the middle and then cover the pit with dirt, plant four big or six to eight smaller heavy feeders around it, you water the pit though the pipe, and the plants roots will find the pit and the extra water as they need it.. works amazing! Only problem I had was that all the plants around it outgrew their cages and had to keeping being cut back, but they produced like mad, planning on making a number of these water/composting/self wicking pits this year in the garden.

another DIY site that I have come across - practicalprimitive.com . What caught my attention was "how to make your own clay" but there is much more.

Cheers,
