Long Term Food Storage---Done Cheaply!
Info at Earth Blog (site)

Came across the info on another site, it has been talked about here, now this sites page lists it out step by step with pics 🙂
This page is using those 2ltr pop bottles.

Thinking on it, if you put plastic around the top of the bottle before you screw on the cap or use some Teflon Tape, it would give an even better seal.

I use a thin bead of silicone inside the rim of the lid for my 5 gallon pails. I just throw in an oxygen absorber and snap the lid on, permanent seal. The teflon tape around the rim of the plastic bottles is a great idea. I'll have to start doing it.

I bought hand warmers as they are oxygen absorbers as well. Threw one in and sealed it shut 🙂

Taz,
was thinking further on the the Tape. Wondering if the Propane Teflon Tape would be better yet again. This tape is designed for gasses as well as water.
Thoughts Taz?

I don't think you need anything more than just the regular lid. Why not test one and see if it holds pressure?
Take your container and leave it in the freezer for a while. Put on the lid on and put it in a warm place or out in the sun . It should make quite a bit of pressure. If it holds, it's air tight.

Once you put an oxy absorber in the container the vacuum will be pulling the lid tighter.... if it holds pressure for sure it will hold a vacuum.

Perf,
do you suggest it be full or empty for the test?

I don't think that it would make any measurable difference.

The oxygen absorbers I used were actually handwarmers I bought on sale at Canadian Tire last spring.

A thought I just had for sealing the 2 liter bottles. Save your old candles. When you have a bunch of stubs melt them in a can. After putting the cap on the 2 liter bottle, turn it upside down and dip it in the liquid wax and you have an instant seal. Just a thought.

For the Bottle idea u could also try a small black rubber O ring on the neck of the bottle as well they are dirt cheap and u can get a large amount for very little....here is a link for a supplier for bags and O2 absorbers i have found here in Canada, the prices are very good specially on the O2 absorbers... http://www.bridensolutions.ca/tools-and-gear/health-and-first-aid/first-aid-kits hope something here helps..btw new to the site and we are just getting our preps going so...ty for the great resources to fall on to in this site...

I use the big glass canning jars to store my beans, rice and pasta. Suck the air out with a foodsaver, date it, and use what you store. This way I only buy my staples when they are on sale and I have plenty to last my family for months. I'm a big fan of flyer thursdays. 🙂

Between gallon glass jars, 3, 5, and 6 gallon food grade buckets with gamma lids, as well as the odd Tupperwear canister, our rice , beans, oatmeal seem to be keeping very well. Speaking of rice, our local Wholesale Club has Basmatti rice on really cheap this week. I have lots in stock so did not get any.
