This is very troubling.

Given that we stock up on antibiotics, I think we need to rethink our strategy to also focus on ways to minimize exposure.

I think that is a very astute comment , and thank you for posting the link. I might add we need to also think about taking time and precautions to minimize risk of small careless injuries from preparing dinner , engaging in recreational sport and activities , handling livestock etc. because injury may or may not have deeper complications but a trip to the hospital may be the most dangerous complication .

This is why we like to look at alternatives.
With antibiotics and other pharma drugs you need to have a supply of them, but this is a limited resource especially if or when the SHTF.
One good thing about the alternatives is that the bugs don't develop a resistance to them.
We have successfully used onion or potato poultices for fighting infections, we use the potato poultice on sensitive skin like the eyes when treating conjuctivitis or if an infection is generating a lot of heat. I tripped in a farm shed, broke one finger and skinned my knee really badly. Being a violinist I was more concerned about my broken finger and totally ignored my knee 🙄
Over the following days my knee became so swollen and hot and the skin over the graze was very badly infected and started to turn white and yuk, so I applied large potato poultices over and around the affected area and after about one week the infection had totally cleared and the skin was starting to clear and then developed scar.
Over non-sensitive skin we use onion poultices or if there is internal infection.
I developed a urinary tract infection a few years ago that progressed to a kidney infection with a lot of blood in the urine, we applied onion poultices over my kidney area for three nights in a row and I also drank lots of parsley tea and fresh water. The kidney infection cleared up nicely.

A lot of injuries become life threatening due to infection so knowing how to deal with mild or severe infections using products you can grow is very important.
We don't even keep antibiotic in our first-aid kit but we do run to garden a lot when injuries occur....except this week when Bushkid broke her leg falling off my horse, then we ran to the hospital instead 😉

I too would like to know more about the poultice.

From Robin Westenras blog:

I would be curious if manuka honey works so well if honey from other medicinal herbs might be of value .

We try to keep things very, very simple...

For something like conjunctivitis take a hanky and grate one small raw potato, making a little pile in the middle of the hanky, fold over the hanky to seal it so potato doesn't fall out. (Fold it in such a way that you only have one layer of material between the potato and your skin)
Place the hanky over your eye and tape in place with some of that white medical paper tape and leave on overnight.
This usually only needs to be done for one night to clear up conjuctivitis, if a bad case you may need two nights.
The silica in the potato draws out the infection and you will find a pile of gunk on the hanky in the morning.
Some friends baby (under six months) had conjunctivitis in both eyes and had been on the standard drops from the chemist and after a week there had been no change in her eyes and she was then fighting them to avoid getting the drops in her eyes. When I saw her I suggested using the little poultices that night over both eyes.
They made them up and put them over her eyes, the coolness of the potato soothed her eyes immediately and they said she didn't complain or fight them and was asleep within about 15 minutes, they repeated it a second night and her eyes were nice and clear and didn't need any further treatment.
For a larger infection that is producing a lot of heat (like my knee was), just make a much bigger poultice.
If doing a large poultice we usually cover the poultice with a hand towel just to reduce the amount of potato juice dripping everywhere.
If the infection is internal like my kidney infection we use onion poultices.
To do this we dice an onion very small then place it in a fry pan with about two tablespoons of water and very gently heat the onion through, then we scoop this into a piece of flannel cotton, fold it over to avoid spilling onion out, be careful to let it cool a little before placing on skin to avoid burning. Once placed over the skin cover it well with a pre warmed towel to retain the heat, replace the towel with a fresh warm one when needed. Keep the poultice in place for a few hours or overnight if convenient. We have used bandages to hold them in place if they are on legs, arms or torso, or even cut a leg off a pair of tights to slip over an arm or leg with a poultice works to keep in in place.

If you have an infection on a finger/fingernail just cut a hollow in an onion or potato and put a bandaid over it to keep in place.

Hope this all makes sense, try it out, it works really, really, really well and is soooo simple and the ingredients are available in your kitchen or garden....I love it 😀

We have even used onions on animals that have had grass seeds under their skin 🙂
