I've been thinking about snack/comfort food with long term storage capability. I personally like individually wrapped items like Hersey's kisses. I could use some more ideas. What do you have on your list???
Dried mango and coconut from Costco. Easy to cycle out and long exp date.
dried fruits, coconut and most importantly cocao for making chocolate
dried fruit, hard candy(I used to make my own but it has been a while)
my fav snack food is salsa with tostito chips - I have the flour to make the chips, a recipe but have yet to make them. I can the salsa
We like to do a lot of baking like cookies, brownies, etc...
Most of the ingredients are already part of our long term food storage, so it makes it easy to accommodate for.
Otherwise, my comfort is in a few bottles of Crown Royal and Havana Club
We also bake, so have supplies for that and also dried fruit.
Love the Idea of a Trail Mix. these would last awhile was long term storage.
Location: Christchurch. Surviving the Shaking.
secoff - I like trail mix too - it's a great source of complex carbs and protein. It's long term storage capabilities are not great though because of the fat in the nuts and seeds. I don't know an exact time frame though. Maybe storing some of it's ingredients separately would be a solution.
Good answers everyone. I store a lot of dried fruit too - apricots, dates, figs, coconut and cocoa as well. I was at IKEA last year some time and noticed they had organic chocolate for $2.00 a bar. I took some home for a taste test and liked it but I haven't been back to purchase more. I am planning to vacuum seal some and do a taste test in a year or two.

I used to love the "Soldier Fuel" bars in the MREs we got in Cadets sometimes. But only the chocolate and rice ones, soft but they remind me of a Crunch bar. Haven't had the cash to order a bunch though. Lots on energy, maybe even a few vitamins, protein, and lots of carbs.
Peanuts...cashews (NoFrills/Fortinos/Loblaws have had big buckets on sale on a regular basis since just before Xmas, with long BB dates), Indian snack mixes (Bikano, Haldirams...I get these at Freshco, Metro, and Wholesale Club...some mixes are hot, some savoury, some sweetish and some are sweet and sour in flavour, we call them Indian 'Bits and Bites').
Walnuts, pecans and almonds from Costco...usually have a year before the BB date and I store them in the chest freezer which keeps them for up to two years.
Pretzels and corn chips (NOT tortilla chips, real corn chips) when the BB dates are good...they tend to have BB dates that are months out from the purchase date. I've gotten them with up to 6 month out on the dates.
Dried fruits from Costco.
Econo bags of hard candies, jelly beans (Walmart's own brand of candies are good quality and have long BB dates).
European chocolate bars when we find them with long BB dates.
Individual hot cocoa packets...we get them in 50 ct boxes when they're on sale at Wholesale Club and they're usually good for at least 10 months
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband
In the interest of science only...ahem...I tried vacuum sealing some Reeses peanut butter cups. They got totally squished. In this case no harm done - we ate the evidence.
