Yes, last year I needed the big washtub for all my produce almost every day, but this year not so much.
Sure, everything is growing and producing, but it just seems like it is so far behind.
We had our first frost warning last night, so the season is really coming to an end soon, and the harvest is decidedly smaller.
Next year will see more changes as to what is grown where, and I think I'm going to do the straw bale squash like Farmgal!
It's not just a matter of getting experience, but getting that experience on the land that you will actually be using.
So if you plan to bug out and grow food, get started at growing food at your BOL now, before you have to spend a few years figuring out the logistics of the garden at a time when you may be depending on a good harvest.
Such good info provided by everyone!
I wanted to add that an effective strawbale cocoon can be improved, i think, by putting squash, etc , in a cage of 1/4" hardware cloth inside, lined with cut-preventive loose straw on the bottom, and random cardboard on the sides. I intend to make some later on if i have time. I had made one for storage in the attic, when previously mice chewed on my exposed squash.
I'm almost finished bagging up my 400 lbs of garlic for sale and stocking.
I thought i would include this perennial calendar reference for y'all as we refine our preparation savvy for more effective planting/harvesting:

I thought I would add this in here. We moved this summer, just three blocks from our old place, but I didn't end up with much in the way of a harvest. I do have loads of room for planting a garden in the spring, despite the fact that I rent my home, and I am trying to find the time to dig it all up before the freeze comes (to save me work in the spring LOL). However, I have decided to do some indoor gardening. I started small to feel things out and have six bean plants, two pepper plants, and five tomato plants growing and looking well. The beans are starting to flower! 🙂 If this is successful, I will expand the operation as I have two wonderful south-facing windows that each have a big shelf in front of it to hold my lovely indoor garden.

I now have a couple of tiny bean pods starting to grow. They are handy because the plants are self-pollinating. Will have to hand pollinate other plants tho. Being able to grow food indoors, without electricity and away from prying eyes is fabulous.
