OK, the 2012 season is now upon us. Traditionally, Victoria Day Weekend is the big planting time. I have planted some peas and spinach already, but temperatures in my area are still dropping to 5 deg.C at night. What, When, and how does everyone else plan to plant this year?

I have a 8 bulb fluorescent fixture that I have in a closet to start my seedlings. It's a strong light that starts them fast and strong. I have moved some beans and peas outside already but I will wait another 2 weeks or so until I move out the rest. Here on the west coast we just started to have some 20 degree days but I'm going to make sure the nights are going to be warm enough first.
Wow Denob! A one year supply for 6! Better get a tractor!
I actually forgot a few crops such as rutabega, parsnip, and probably a few others. As we have 2 little ones aged 2 & 3 years, they count as one, so family of 5 I guess. As for the tractor, well, my father did it without one, so I guess the teenagers will be helping out....just like I used to. Back then I thought it was slave labour, but now I can't wait to get started. How times change. Anyways, this weekend marks my last frost date in zone 4a so away we go!
Denob - what kinds of gourds are you going to grow?

I picked up a mixed package of medium sized gourds...just for decoration, but if there are any of a good size, I may try bottle making.
I'm already eating lettuce from my cold frame - planted last fall/froze/somehow grew again under the old glass window- and onions (ditto - going to let a few go to seed and collect it - same with the lettuce). Today I'm planting out Tomatos, peppers, zucchini, and butternut squash. Already planted out the acorn squash and a dozen new raspberry plants (to double my patch). Tomorrow I'll transplant some flowers started inside like marigolds, cosmos, and zinnias. I yet have to plant my potatoes (small spuds left over from last years), carrots, parsnips. I'm on the look-out for 3 more blueberry bushes this year, to add to the 5 , I already have. My 3 grown apple trees are in full bloom - they missed the killing frost!
It's alot of work for me (single late 50s female), but my youngest son (17) says he's now interested in helping......YAHOO!!!
Good progress today, lots of digging, forking, raking. Just on HUGE rock in my way(part of life when you live on the side of a mountain)...
I should be ready to plant the majority on Sunday.
Pics to follow!

I was going show how to make gourd cups and bowls at the meet but I doubt there will be time.
Bought a house in Feb, when the snow finished melting I discovered a wee little garden patch and was so excited... There's not alot of room (the patch is funny shaped, 1.5-2ft wide by about 15 long, and not quite square corners).
I'm a complete and utter tyro when it comes to gardening, so I decided to keep it simple this year, or at least, I hope I'm keeping it simple.
6 Roma tomato plants
2 Jalapeno Pepper
2 Cayenne Pepper
2 Hungarian Wax Pepper
6 Garlic
1 Oregano
1 Basil
1 Sage
2 Strawberry (these went in a big stone planter on the patio)
I'm sure if I measured the proper spacing and planting distances, I could have fit more into the garden space, but this will do for now, and if I get anything edible out of my learning experience, I'll consider it a bonus! In the mean time, I now have an excuse to go outside and play in the dirt twice a week.

Oh sweetheart, I don't have to run faster than the bear...
Garlic gets planted in October for the next year.....
We are trying our luck with the straw bales.
2 bales have green pepper plants and we have windows covering them.
2 - spinach
4 - pole beans
4 - peas
4 bales are unplanted as of yet - yellow beans maybe?
One mound of cucumbers
one mound for 2 types of squash
I also have 4 kinds of tomatoes. I am going to try growing them in the upside down planters we bought at the dollar store - as seen on TV for 19.99. We will see how it is goes.
Food will get you through times with no money, but money will not get you through times with no food.
Unbelievable...
I get up this morning, stretch my back a bit to get the knots out from picking stones in my garden area. Fumble around to make the coffee, and start looking at this weeks circulars to find the best deals on garden supplies...you know, top soil, manure, who may have flats of decent veggies that I couldn't start myself. Then I flip open the lid on my laptop and there is my weathereye program flashing a little red warning at me....
FROST WARNING
You gotta be kidding me!
Thankfully, I only have a few rows of cool weather stuff in right now like peas and spinach...but really? Still getting frost warnings? I think I will be gathering some tarps over the course of the summer so I can cover up the plants this fall. My parents used to keep old sheets and blankets that were starting to wear thin and cover the garden when frost warnings came. I would be really ticked off if I lost all the tomatoes I plan on putting in this weekend to a freak frost.
I don't know around your place but I was always told never plant before May 24th in case of frost no matter how nice the weather has been unless it's under a cold frame.
In Ontario there has actually been snow in June. Mind you that was a very long time ago.
