I defidently have a late start to the season. Just got confirmation of a plot and should be able to start PLANTING next week.

Those rainy days you were saving for...may not be quelled by cash.

I had a 10lb bag of red potatoes go bad and start to sprout, so I found a place in the yard and stuck them in the ground. A little late for planting, but maybe we'll get some of those small potatoes out of them.
Other than that, the tomatoes are showing some flowers already and we have a few peppers starting to grow on the plants.
The 3 sisters are showing signs of stress, maybe from lack of sun or poor soil, but the corn is very slow to grow and only about a 50% germination.
I upped the watering schedule and that seems to be helping many of the plants.
I think it will be a couple of years before we get the soil just right, as this is the first growing season for the garden.

Love reading everyone's updates, would you like me to bring you a feed bags worth of two or three year old barn compost for your garden to the meet? sounds like a compost drink would be a great thing for your 3 sisters, and I have lots just waiting to be used? Let me know if you think you would like and if there will be room and boss approval for some on the trip home 🙂

I would love that...I don't think the boss would mind, and if she does...well...I'll just have to deal with it!

Thats really to bad, so sorry to hear that, will no doubt ruin most of the rest of the harvest season but the plant should be able to recover enough growth that it will come back nice and strong next year. Hope you figure out how it happened..

Most likely a cat. Meet 2 of my neighbors coming out of my back yard last night carrying their cat. I guess when the cat gets out it always goes in my back yard. Strange since they live 4 doors down.

Hope your are right Farmgal

Oh Lord - I'm drowning in weeds. Go away for a week and come back to a jungle. It's been extremely hot and we've finally had lots of rain so everything is growing like mad. I have cardboard and straw that will go down in the next few days.

I am so behind. My sprouted potatoes are still in the basement. I could have planted LOTS more seeds but I ran outta time. I will still plant more and hope for the best.

That's life - the garden is a huge improvement over last year but no where near as productive as it could be - I got tired of hauling poop!

Awe, heck, Anita, it's not too late to plant pretty well anything! Potatoes - just throw them on the ground and cover them with straw......it's supposed to work - what have you got to lose? Carrots and other underground crops can grow now and stay in the ground until it almost freezes. As for weeds, don't pull, just throw some STRAW over them around your plants. One of my favourite classic books is "The Ruth Stout No Work Garden Book" -she advocates hay but I think it has too many weed seeds, but she says to just throw more hay on top of any sprouted weeds! lol Even if you don't get to all the weeds, they'll shade your plants at least......haha.
Regardless, your seeds will be fine for next year.

The garden is actually starting to show signs of production.
Peas are starting to form pods and have lots of flowers...
Green Beans also starting to show pods...
Zuccinni is ready to flower out
Tomatoes are forming and lots of flowers...
Cabbages are growing well and will soon be forming heads...
Banana Pepper has two peper almost ready to pick and plenty of buds...
Strawberry Pepper has one pepper, still green, but lots of buds also
Green and red Bell Peppers are all forming peppers, but the plants seem stunted...about 6 - 8 inches tall only.

All in all, it looks like a good starter season. The wild raspberries & blackberries will be ready soon too!

We have had so much rain and cold weather the gardens are doing very poorly...I have square foot garden boxes with pvc pipe and plastic I can put on to keep some heat in but this year will not produce very well in our area
