Holy Moly farmgal! That is a list!

We have had an early spring and beautiful weather. We usually can't plant until June so this is awesome.

We have our straw bales. They have had manure and dirt shovelled on top of them and were allowed to sit in the rain etc for a month before planting.

Planted in the bales we - have beans, peas, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes 2 red varieties and 1 golden. The zombie celery is coming up and hubby planted corn. We have cucumbers and squash yet to plant, but the seedlings are coming along.

Our blueberry bushes look like a bumper crop with all the flowers. The strawberry beds were overgrown, so hubby took care of that. Rhubarb is coming nicely and the grapes have all been staked up again. They fell over last year.

I am planting herbs in the mexican pots that we have on the deck. We already have chives doing great, but the parsley has been overwhelmed by the expanding strawberry beds. lol

I hope that I am up for the work and that the summer stays as beautiful as it has been. 😛

Thanks for the kind comments on the garden, its coming along, we have a few more things that will need to go in June but DH will need to get that in and done for me, and then it will just be a matter of as things come ready, pulling, and replanting for the rest of the season.. did a little happy dance as my cherry tomato is in bloom, so fresh tomato's will be starting by the second week of june..

I was planning on gardening in a plot of land beside my apartment but some of the other tenants aren't the nicest about it so I am on the lookout for a new place to grow. I would do some veggies indoors but there isn't enough sun coming in.

Those rainy days you were saving for...may not be quelled by cash.

Sorry to hear about the frost! didn't get them covered in time? still got starts in the house? or you might have to break down and get new ones from a nursery..

Was out walking my big front yard and I have a row of tree's that I am growing, I have a few things underplanted between the trees themselves, the big row is set up on the edge of my property with a fairly steep and big ditch line down, then ditch then the other side, the country cuts the front of their side 2 or 3 times a year but not the upper ditch side on mine..

I am thinking about doing a small "hill" planting with two sqaush per hill, and by hill, I basicly mean, shovel hole, pull out the grass (throw it into compost pile) mix dirt with a shovel full of compost and plant back with the seeds/water and get started.. What I am looking for is to have the plants become ground cover and over run the whole side of the ditch on my side, which will give them their full sun..

The extra compost in the soil will be good for the starting bushes and tree's and the squash will help with shade and ground cover for the tree roots but the tree's will help keep the area directly below cooler on the main plant in the heat of the summer (less water required that way) and yet, each plant would be able to have easily ten plus feet of growing space..

Can anyone see why this would not work?? before I go to the effort of putting in another 40 or so plants..

Here in the Rocky Mountain foothills on the edge of the prairies we have frost danger well into June (and really, any night of the growing season) so we start lots of things indoors and baby them as we harden them off by carrying the trays out during the daytime and bringing them in at night when frost threatens in the weather forecast. Local garden lore says it's safe to plant out after May Long weekend, but we wait till the first week of June.

We garden in raised beds filled with compost and manure to combat our local hard clay soils, and we seed our "cool weather crops" like peas, radishes, lettuce, beets, carrots, parsnips etc. in April if the ground isn't frozen, or as soon as the ground thaws, so we have all of these things popping up all over at the moment. Beans, cukes, and zukes were seeded this week. Next week we will seed the corn.

We start our seeds in March and keep the seedlings under fluorescent lights, sometimes with a small fan blowing in the room for air flow and to make the plants stronger, and we don't put them out in the garden till the first week of June. We started 24 plants each of 4 tomato varieties, 24 bell peppers, 12 turnips, 6 each of two pumpkin varieties, several herbs, and some perennials for the flower gardens (way cheaper than buying plants if you start early enough).

Every night we check the forecast "low" temperature, and cover/bring in trays of seedlings as needed. I'm hopeful that I can plant out the trays of seedlings this weekend now that they've been hardening off for two or three weeks. 🙂

Well, I have been busy putting in my mom's garden in Central Alberta, but at the farm, DH got the Big Hugelbed (4 by 5 by 30 feet long) planted for the season for all the hot melon growing etc and he has gotten so far 80 squash planted out into the food forest edge in six kinds, and will try and get the rest of the sqaush planted out and done this week yet.. In case anyone just went ahh, on the amount of sqaush being planted, please remember we don't just garden for our own use but also for winter feed for different farm critters to help keep their feed costs down, and Root Veggies an Squash is loved by all, from my chickens, to my pigs, my sheep and my cows..

Now, the weeding begins!!! Spent today weeding the garden, cleaning those darn maple keys out of the eavestroughs, and weeding some more! I'll put down sections of newspapers around the plants tomorrow and mulch over top...
