Today our first lamb was born on the farm - I guess that means I'm a real farmer now. Momma and baby are doing well. I'm not sure if there are more coming or not. The other ewe is due anytime as well - exciting times on the farm and I am so relieved there were no complications.

Congrats Anita,

Just had my last three (out of 17 lambs this year born) this past weekend, another set of twins and a single, so girl or boy? What kind of sheep? Are you going to milk momma if she only has a single for some fresh sheep milk in the house?

It's a boy. I've been so focused on the birth these past weeks I hadn't given milking much thought. Momma was so huge I thought she was going to have twins at least but since Baby 1 was born at 10:30 I'm guessing she's probably done - but what do I know!

It's a cross between a Shetland papa and unknown Mama (shes a mix too -perhaps Cheviot and Texel) She was given to us when friends had to move from the country back into town and the woman was a little mixed mentally so I never did get a straight answer.

I've been wanting to make cheese...something else to think about...I'd also have to learn how to milk her.

It's a great life huh? 🙂

Going to keep him intact or altering him if you planning to put him in freezer camp. (I know, I know, he just got here and is so cute, but just asking 🙂 If she had him at 10:30, and nothing else happening, the odds are that good she is done, if she is still in labour, might want to give a helping hand.

As long as her teats have a good placement and size, milking her is easy, just wait another day or two for little one to get a good start, then put a little gate across the corner in the jug, the lamb goes in for the night, you milk in the morning, and then put the lamb on her for the rest of the day/evening, and bing bang boom, a milk share program.. works quite well as the lamb is still in the pen and they can even lay side by side but can't nurse.

Congrats on your new set of twins, and your rapidly growing flock, glad all went well! You will have baby wool to work with later this year when they get their first shearing!
