Florida Makes Off-Grid Living Illegal – Mandates All Homes Must Be Connected To An Electricity Grid
Robin Speronis that’s come under fire. She lives off the grid in Florida, completely independent of the city’s water and electric system. A few weeks ago, officials ruled her off-grid home illegal. Officials cited the International Property Maintenance Code, which mandates that homes be connected to an electricity grid and a running water source. That’s just like saying our dependency on corporations isn’t even a choice. The battle to live without most utilities has been ongoing for Robin, the self-sufficient woman has lived for more than a year and a half using solar energy, a propane camping stove and rain water.
In the end, she was found not guilty of not having a proper sewer or electrical system; but was guilty of not being hooked up to an approved water supply.
Of all the dumbass things to outlaw. Although it doesn't say what she was doing with her waste.
I suspect this is an example of a law being misinterpreted. The law is likely intended to prevent shanty towns that have no basic utilities and improper sewage, causing people to live in squalor. It's likely not intended for people having a good quality of life through modern, off-grid technology. But bureaucrats are bureaucrats...
I think you'd find this would happen in any city or town. You are free to disconnect from the electrical utility but not the water. The same thing happened in Aylmer Ontario to an associate of mine. I also know of others that have collection systems but they are using them in parallel to the town water system still active in their homes. The reason? Your waste water is being processed by the municipal sewer system. If you collect rain water and that water goes down the drain through sinks and toilets then the municipality will view that as stealing services since the payment for sewer services is levied on your use of town water. If you have your own septic tank then the municipality would let you disconnect. It's pretty rare nowadays that anyone in the city has their own septic tank or bed.
this was just talked about in one of the east coast provinces on the CBC, a women was off-grid in the town and she had the same thing, she could go solar but she had to by bylaw be hooked up to the water and the sewer, even if she was not using the water (she used rain water), the courts ruled in favor of the town and said she had to pay her water/sewer bill. I will see if I can track it down.
I was talking about it on my facebook and someone said that it was the same in their city in alberta, you can go off the power grid but you must have the water/sewer connections and pay for it.
Going off grid in the city, even with a composting toilet, they were saying that the grey water would be a issue. I expect that you will see this happen in almost all towns/cities. I was having coffee with someone who lives in the same general valley around me, say within two hours or so, and their country was trying to put water meters on the farmers wells so they could charge the farmers for the water.. that was a good fight.. and I have not heard about it in my own country yet.

there are many places in the US that it is illegal to collect rain water...
Collecting rainwater should not be illegal. Good grief, they would charge us for the air we breathe if they could, and I'm sure they are looking for a way to do that! I get having to stay connected to the municipal water system, but collecting rainwater and using the groundwater (i.e. well water, springs, etc.) on your own rural land should be none of their business.
So... my new home has its own septic system, rain catchment systems and community wells. I will be installing Solar eventually but wouldn't go completely off grid unless I absolutely had to. There isn't an option to connect to the municipality (lol).
In my scenario no one is processing my waste water. My community wells are just that, community run (as long as we have them tested and inspected). We have an extremely active seed saving, non GMO fighting, heirloom farming contingency here too. There's even talk that our mayor may be a bit of a prepper on the sly!

" they would charge us for the air we breathe if they could," = it's already done . Carbon CO2 taxes 😉
You are all under TOTAL control of the NWO and have no chance at all, get out of the US/UK and Bug-Out to a safe place???
It makes sense that a city would want to regulate water and waste usage within their jurisdiction as a matter of public health. Imagine a city the size of Saskatoon (120,000 +/-) where everyone was using septic fields in spite of their location with neighbours. Where everyone was using the ground water for their supply water system as well as rain water collection which naturally replenishes the same ground water that they drain. Imagine the outcome were the ground water to become contaminated by all of the sewage that that many people produce! It starts to make sense that regulation is necessary.
We often fall victim to the idea that government is removed from 'us'. Here in Canada at least, the government is 'us'. So when the government attempts to regulate CO2 emissions, or waste water, or even the speed at which we travel on the roads, it is an expression of 'our collective will'. Not to negatively impact the lives of people (although this certainly happens), but to safe guard the weak and the majority. One can live entirely off grid if one chooses an appropriate place where the neighbours are not adversely effected by the effort. Ultimately, it comes down to the 'social contract'; which is to say, the deal we make with the rest of society in order to enjoy the collective benefits of cooperating. There is always a price to be paid.
Needs must when the devil drives.
Another situation where we have to find ways to hide in plain site.
Paying for the minimum service and using the off grid setups will still save money and keep the "town office" off your back for the most part.
I do dishes and laundry with municiple water but that's it.
In a couple months the power meter will turn a lot slower too.
Not hooked to gas so this isn't an issue.
Yes it's on grid, but only slightly.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
