Have a great Canada Day in Ottawa. When are you returning and will you be going through North Bay?
Also most Libraries have free WiFi as well.
ps.. you drove by a lot of us in the GTA as well!
WildE,
Turns out finding wi-fi locales is not as difficult as getting enough hours in the day to travel and sightsee. lol.
Thanks for all of your suggestions.
Mountainman.
dern it means that I miss you 🙁
oldschool,
Maybe our paths will cross next time.

There is only one route north of North Bay and that is HWY 11. I am on it (almost). About 1.5 hours north of the bay. Please plan at least a brief stop and partake of some Northern hospitality.

Love the updates. Enjoy and be safe. Curious what you brought along in the way of "preps" that would stand out from your run of the mill packing...
JAB,
One big thing is noticable when camping in new places every night or every other night. You vehicle must haves find their way to the right location.
As some may have seen the mod's I made to the cargo area of my Tahoe I posted in another thread. One of the mod's was to add 3 rows of lite bungie cord on the inside of the rear most side windows, these bungies keep our pillows quick and handy, they also allow the pillows to insulate the vehicle from too much solar warmth, the pillows get a chance to dry out if the ground was too damp and the pillows are out of the way.
We are using a 3 man geodesic dome tent, 4 pole version, very tough for a light tent. The only improvement I may consider for the tent would be to upgrade from fiberglass poles to anodized aluminum. I cannot complain I have been using this tent since 1994. We set the tent up the exact same way and take it down the exact same way. We, as a family, are getting quite well practiced at this. Setting up in the dark with or without flashlights is now possible. This is a hint, find the method to setup your tent and practice until you and your family can do it in the dark without lights, then you know you are ready for when it counts. Pack your tent into the stuff sacks in logical order - tent poles and pegs go in one bag, the fly and the tent in the other. The fly is the last item needed so it gets packed first so it comes out last. When I roll up the tent I always roll my tent so I am holding the main door. Thus, when it is time to setup, I am standing at the main door when I unroll my tent. This saves time and effort, it just takes a little discipline to roll the tent the same everytime.
Our cooler is just behind the front passenger seat, I lowered the the seat so cooler is on the flat cargo area on the backside of the seat back. The cooler is wedge quite well and does not shift about.
One leason when traveling in the North Bush, always carry snack foods and drinks incase the small towns close up at 1700's and are not open. $1.45 per litre for gasoline!!! Highway robbery. Sorry, I got off track there.
Well that is it for now,
Mountainmna.

ICRCC,
Send me a PM next week or the week after that, and I will see what we can do about linking up.
My access to the internet has been less than perfect so far, I may be delayed in replying.

Great advice about the tent setup...back when I would take off on my bike for a weekend at a time, I could set up my 7 x 7 square dome in the dark...believe me, I had to do it a few times. Recently, I pulled the family tent out and set it up in the front yard. The reason for that was to air it out as it had been rolled up in storage for about four years. But I soon realized that I needed to do this more often, as I had forgotten some of the more subtle nuances of setting it up. It has 3 sizes of poles and is easier done in a specific order. Now that I have it clear in my head, I think I'll be practicing a little more often.
Let me know when you'll be back in Quebec and we'll see if we can meet up!

Denob,
Thanks.
I have a quick update. We are staying longer in the East. We will now be starting are trip back on 21/22 July instead of 15/16 July.
I will keep you posted when I can. Reliable internet contact and time have been a challenge so far on the trip. You must know the story, when we have good access we do not have the time and when we have the time we do not have internet access.
It would be good to meet up. Any preferred areas around Montreal?? My boy wants to see the home of the Habs.
I will keep in touch when I can.

Mountain Man...
you gotta make sure you go down to old Montreal on a Sunny day, it is one of the most beautiful places in Canada. So many street vendors, street cafes and people painting and drawing, so much fun.

Update 09 July 2012
Evenin' Folks,
Well, we are back on the road again. The break at Seafoam, NS was great and needed. Yesterday the starter went on the Tahoe, luckily our friends gave me a ride to New Glasgow to Canadian Tire - thankfully it was open on Sunday. I have all the tools necessary for the swap-out in less than 90 minutes I had the Tahoe running again. Whew!!
Today, we made our way across Cape Breton to Louisbourg, NS. We are camped not too far from the Fortress. I have had time to study the design of the old forts - Louisbourg and the Citadel in Halifax plus the other one up near the NB border. I will write a detailed post on defences when my trip is over. After studying the old forts I have some new ideas about what a defensive position for preppers could look like. Someone remind me to write the post, but please wait until I get home, lol.
Tomorrow we will visit the Fortress again, before heading North to Ingonish Beach, NS.
Today, refuelling was at $1.239 per litre, better than the $1.459 in Northern ON, but a lot more than the $1.139/$1.149 around Toronto. Ce le vie!
I will keep you posted,
Mountainman.
PS - Thanks for the tips for Ol' Montreal!!
Howdy All,
We are currently, on the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. We are camping in Cheticamp, NS. We expect to complete the Cabot Trail tomorrow. We will be in Antigonish, NS on Saturday at the Highland Games. Then we are off to The Rock to visit the Viking Settlement.
The new starter is working well. We will need to get an oil change soon.
Hope everyone is doing well and having a great summer.
Stay prepared,
Mountainman.
Sounds like a wonderful trip! (My daughter and her family live about 10 minutes from the Fortress of Louisbourg in Albert Bridge.)
