Evening All,
Currently, in Cochrane, ON. Met with ICRCC earlier today in a small resturant/pub in Kenogami Lake, ON. Yesterday I met with Denob in St. Jerome, QC. I am very glad to have had the opportunity to meet other like-minded folks in other parts of Canada. WildE, I am not sure if you have been able to get online lately or not. If you are further North than Cochrane, ON - maybe we can meet up in the next day. Call me on my cell, please. If not, we will have to do this some other day.
We have had troubles getting online in the last few days. Sorry for that.
Our trip through Quebec was mostly pleasant. We cut our trip to Quebec City short due to a lack available parking. Maybe next time. We did find a good campground in Drummondville, QC - Camping des Voltigeurs. I would stay there again. Last night we stayed at a provincial site just inside a park North of Mont Laurier, QC.
Those seeking affordable land, I saw a poster on a tree just before the park that said 317 acres for $169,000.00. It was in the mountains, looked like it had forest and water. Sorry, I was not shopping so I did not stop for more details. Just to let you know there are large tracks of land in semi-remote places for not too bad of price. In Alberta, a piece of land like that would have been $1.5 mil.
Tomorrow we continue North on Hwy #11. Hopefully, we end the day near Thunder Bay, ON.
That is all for now.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
It was great meeting with you and your family today. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your journey. What an amazing opportunity to see our wonderful country.
It was great to meet you and your family on Friday and get a day off from the construction. I must admit that I am a bit jealous of your opportunity to tour the country coast to coast and meet like minded folks along the way. Next time I will try to remember...Dunkin Donuts closed...Tim Horton's open! Have a safe rest of the trip.
Update 29 July 2012.
Howdy,
Found another wi-fi connection, yah.
Denob and ICRCC, thanks for meeting up.
We set-up camp at Twin Lake Camping, 3km's from Moonbeam, ON. It was okay. Could be fun, they have a good set-up: lakes, beaches and mainly good campers.
The country North of Hearst until Long Lac was nicely barren. The driving was easy, no congestion. Lots of space. Less hills than I was expecting. Not as many lakes as I thought, it was good to drive the route. By the end of day we were safely in Thunder Bay, ON. If the weather holds, we will drop in for a visit at Fort William, before heading for the Manitoba border.
One more day of driving and then hopefully back in the land of more affordable gasoline. Today the crimes topped out at $1.379 per litre.
I will post more when I get another opportunity.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Morning,
Today starts in Regina, SK. It is 01 August 2012. After breakfast and a fuel top-up we are headed for the legislature building and then to Moose Jaw to see the Tunnels - apparently used by Al Capone or his people during Prohibition.
Wow, what a change from the rolling, rocky hills and multitude of lacks big and small of the Canadian Shield to the vast open prairie!! Those who reside in Eastern Manitoba, I believe are well situated for a finding affordable and usable land. Not to mention you should have less stress from exposure to others. That could be a double edged sword.....less threats in bad times but then again less opportunities for trade during good times??? I look forward to hearing from anyone in the Manitoba area to comment on that, please.
The big SK, this is the bread basket of Canada, if not the world. Keep up the good work. I heard on the radio yesterday that Russia and the Ukraine exêct to have reduced wheat yeilds this season. That could be good for Canadian wheat farmers or a scenario to control world pricing?? Inflict starvation on the poor of the world??
We should arrive in the area of Medicine Hat by the end of the day, possibly further West.
Tim Horton's seems to have wi-fi hotspots now. Used one yesterday, but the drive was long and the day short. This morning is the only time I have to update here.
I will update where and when I can. Heading West for BC in the next days.
Mountainman.
PS - I am speaking with my printer. I will try to have more books printed by the end of August.
Afternoon,
Update 02 August 2012.
Yesterday ended in Medicine Hat, AB. We met up with friends and stayed over. Nice and warm yesterday, this morning cool and then damp.
Heading for BC in a short while. Just need to leave some supplies at home before continuing the journey.
Not much to update, other than fuel prices. In Calgary, AB it is $1.099 a litre today. That is a lot better than the $1.459 litre we paid in June in Northern Ontario. The fuel price gouge is still a hot topic for me. I will address after the trip when I have the time to focus my thoughts better.
Next update will be from BC.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Hey MM. Sounds like a fabulous trip. How are the kids appreciating it? Any feedback? I am always curious how things and experiences are viewed through different eyes and perceptions. The book is awesome. I have read it twice now and with your permission will share it with a good friend of mine in prepping. I am using it as a basis for much fine tuning. It also is very down to earth and "real". Thanks again so much.
Cheers, JAB
JAB,
No problem, use as you see fit. I am glad you have found my book useful.
As for the trip, my boy, is having a good time. Some days are better from his point of view than others. IE- Travel days for him suck. But the activity days are a blast. He wished we had more time at Fort William, unfortunately, with a trip this big and so little time, some visits are quite short.
We do get some time in hard quarters, it is not all in the tent. Having said that we have had a good amount of tenting.
If your good friend wants their own copy at some point in the future, please, send me a PM.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Taz,
I may drop by your shop today for a few minutes before we continue into BC.
Maybe my boy could get to hold a M-4?? 🙂 Just for a photo, of course.
First we are headed for the Legislature Building in downtown Edmonton. We will get to Victoria, soon.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Howdy,
We are now in BC. However, I think I have a new transport challenge. I believe, my fuel pump may be toast. Battery has power and the engine turns over, no problem. The fuel tank is at least 3/4 full. Trying to get a hold of a friend who has excellent mechanical skills.
I will keep you posted of my progress.
Taz,
I was in Wild West and spoke with an employee there. Unfortunately, I asked if he know of any employees with a nickname of "Waz" not Taz. Sorry I was not able to link up. Our change of itinerary was so short notice I was not able to give more notice.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Morning,
Update 07 August 2012.
Still in Blackpool, BC. With a lot of help from family and friends the Tahoe has the fuel tank out, the fuel pump out and the fuel filter out. Now, just trying to secure replacement parts. The long weekend slowed things a little. 😆
Hopefully, be roadworthy within a day. Then it is down to Kamloops, BC and area to see family and friends.
We went kayaking on one of the local lakes on Sunday. It was sunny and hot, love it.
More when and where I can.
Mountainman.
Afternoon,
Update 07 August 2012 part 2.
Well, the fuel pump is on order and should be in town tomorrow. The Tahoe should be up and running tomorrow afternoon or evening depending on when parts arrive.
The adventure continues. 🙂
Mountainman.
Update 10 August 2012
Afternoon,
We got the Tahoe rolling last night. The new fuel pump is working well. Thanks, to Ravingmadman for the Tahoe Yukon Forum for the guidance and instructions on replacing a fuel pump on a late 90's Tahoe.
We are now just outside Kamloops, BC visiting with friends.
I will update more later. It feels good to able to fix the Tahoe enroute, of course help from family and friends was necessary this time.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
Update 11 August 2012
Morning,
Our visit in the Kamllops, BC area continues to go well. Looks like Sunday afternoon or early evening we will begin our trip for the coast. We should be on the Island by Monday evening, depending on getting a ride on the ferry and all. Victoria first, then up Island to Parksville before taking the ferry to Horseshoe Bay and beginning the trip for home. Looks like we should be getting home around the 18th of August. This has been a long, however, wonderful roadtrip!!
I will update when and where I can.
Mountainman.

DAMN, the employee who you spoke to and asked for Waz, was me. 🙁 I would have been thrilled to have the chance to visit with you. I'm sorry we didn't connect. If you're ever through this way again, stop in. I'm the guy who wears the camoflage, Tim Hortons baseball cap. Nobody at work knows me as Taz, just Richard.
