Ya know, I used to wonder how people in areas powered by nuclear power plants prepped for that and thought...lucky me!
But wait just a second, I suddeny realized that Quebec has Gentilly II, just 140km east of me...Hmmm.
Also to note, the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal has a slowpoke reactor also...not AS dangerous, but still!
Hydro Quebec claims that in case of accident, the danger zone is only a 70km radius. Not too sure that I buy that!
Also, it is under 100km...that's road km, not as the crow flies, from one of my BOL's...
Does anyone here store Iodine tablets or other essentials in case of a nuclear power plant accident?
Yes I have a supply of iodine tablets stored. Don't know how effective they would be though. You need to take a tablet BEFORE any exposure and it gives you 24 hours before you need to take the next one. By that time I would be long gone and many miles away. I am over 40 so I am in the low risk group anyway. I have had them for quite some time now but I think the self life is about 7 years. Oddly enough I think they would be good for much longer as potassium iodide is a slat. More importantly I have detection equipment. It is old but it works. I test it once a year.
Wind direction is very important. If you are 140km west of a reactor and the prevailing winds are from the west you should be fine if there is a mishap.
Gravlore, I thank you!
I have not heard of Modifilan til now, I am going to be searching for some tomorrow. It would be great to have on hand JIC (as I live within 50 km of the Mac reactor) but also for my boys. I try to do as much herbally as I can for them. 🙂 Thanks so much for mentioning that!!!
.
A note on Modifilan. Modifilan contains a potassium iodide. For the purpose of protecting the thyroid gland in the event of a nuclear incident you must take a dose of 130mg (for an adult) and that will protect you for 24hours. If the dosage of Modifilan that you take does not contain 130mg of potassium iodide it will absolutely not protect you.
As for the claim that Modifilan Detoxifies the body from radioactive elements it is unsubstantiated and clearly misleading.
.
I stand corrected, let me rephrase.
The ingredients in Modifilan (brown seaweed) is what I ended up reading about. 2 of my boys have been on major meds for years with minimal results. i think and look outside the pharma box all the time and usually it is a post like this where I end up finding something that works.
My son takes 3000 mg of Vitamin C a day. Without it he is violent. With it, more subdued and social, the aggression is still there but not as severe and only lasts a short time. I can give him all the OJ and citrus in the world but nothing works like a few chewable vitamin c tabs.
We have tried everything from fish oils to special diets to zoloft to massage/aroma/music/sensory therapy and the results are just not there. So, I am now gearing up for another trial and error. 🙂 Another reason I prep, some of these treatments can easily crash a bank account in a few short weeks, but we have to try.
I am very grateful for the people in this forum and all and I mean ALL the advice! (I think I may start a new post about that lol) 🙂

Just a note about vitamin C...nothing I have seen scientific data on, but read about...
Green peppers contain 2 times the vitamin C as an orange.
Red peppers contain 3 times the vitamin C as green peppers.
Maybe something to think about if you can't get those tablets.
The biggest issue with vitamin C is that the body flushes anything that it doesn't use within a day.
I might add in
Vit D3 helps in moods so fast it is funny
Vit B12 helps with brain functions
see a Natural Path Doc to query about administration of doses, more in the beginning to get into the body, then less as time goes along for maintenance doses.
.
If I could get him to eat that stuff I would, his palette is extremely limited. I can get him to drink almost anything through a juicer though lol Even beets! If those tabs aren't available I will be hoping and crossing fingers we have hydro or we are up $### creek! YIKES!
When I had my garden, I had 44 pepper plants. We made home made veggie juice galore! Oh to have that kind of space again. i would be in Autism Heaven lol

Interesting, Thank you.
That just might justify my adding some Freeze Dried Red Peppers to by Preps. 🙂

i keep K+iodide, but i also store Calcium/magnesium and vitamin D
there is one type of radiation (without the book in front of me i can't recall it) that binds to the calcium in your body. the book talks about how the body will use the good (pure) calcium from supplements and food and push out the radiated calcium inside you. . .
IIRC the nuclear material that causes this problem is unlikely released in a nuke bomb, i still heeded the warning to keep a calcium supplement in stock (hey it doesn't hurt to take either)
beyond that, i keep stock on time released Vit C, Jamison's "stress ease" a good mix of B Vit and C. and Vit D.
i've heard arguments that time released Vit C is only absorbed in the stomach and first part of the small bowel, and while Vit C is mostly wasted in your urine, about 90mg/hour is absorbed then the rest is dumped. the time release tables change the colour of my urine for 12 hours or more. . . in my mind, if it's being wasted at 12 hours, then there is vit C in my blood being dumped by my kidneys and therefore some is being used as well.
of course, the best source for Vitamins and minerals is FOOD :D, which means we all should be growing it, and we all should be taking better care of our soil! but i do believe in storing what is needed too.
