So, I do not know what everyone else is going to be doing Saturday morning, but I'll be butchering our pig. First time doing this. Although my dad did it back in the day, and he'll be there to give pointers.

Hopefully we don't do to badly of a job of it. Anyone have any pig butchering experience?

Good job Quebecker! I'm sure it will be a great experience. My only butchering experience was a rooster - I cried. I know how to do it but for $3.10 a chicken I am happy to pay someone else to do it for now!

Youtube is great but I bet having your dad there will be even better!

Okay, so he is all cut up, and cooling in an old fridge. Tomorrow I package him up. When we weighted him, full he was 220 lbs. So we figure remove everything, and we'll end up with 120 lbs of meat. Not bad for a summer's worth of growth.

And nothing is better than having an old guy there, telling you how they used to do it, back in the day. That helped a lot, we were never lost at any point, and he always knew exactly what to do next.

Great experience, pig from start to finish, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Hogs are easy to butcher and we often do three of the in an afternoon. The most fun is making ham and bacon, you can do it in the same pails. Although an injector is recommended for thick legs and cuts with bones in them. smoking is optional but makes for nice flavor if you do. I always hold back some meat to grind for pepperoni and sausage.

If you do it once, you will never go back to a butcher and his big prices.

congrats on butchering your piggy, and enjoy all the fun extra bits that you can use to make interesting meals that home butchering allows you to have an use, It is quite easy to make your own ham and bacon. I do all my own butchering for personal use, as the rules here in ontario are very clear, if you butcher at home, it must stay at home, most of the bigger critters raised on the farm are sent to the provincally approved butcher so that I can do farm gate sales, however I do almost all the small critters myself.

I am so glad that you got to do this with your dad, its wonderful to be able to share that kind of family knowledge to the next generations 🙂
