We do not have the same stores here in Quebec as the rest of Canada, and I'm sure we might have some that the rest of Canada doesn't.

My question is, what stores would store food grade buckets? As in a national store?

I've read that any storage container that shows a no. 2 recycle stamp is good for food storage. Check out Home Depot or Réno Depot.
Hopefully this will help.

I get used cooking oil buckets from a french fry truck near me, and I know there million of them in Quebec. And if you ask nice, they might take the lid off with out wrecking it, so you can reuse it.

Thee problem with cooking oil buckets in Quebec is that many places are getting oil in a mylar bag lined box now. Even if they get buckets, most restaurants are keeping them to reuse themselves. Reno Depot, Rona, and I believe even Canadian tire all sell buckets in the paint section, But I have only seen lids at Reno Depot.

You can order buckets and other food storage supplies online from www.bridensolutions.com and www.incaseof.ca Both of these are Canadian companies based in Alberta 🙂

Most grocery stores that have bakery departments get mixes for things like muffins in 3 or 4 gallon buckets, they are often happy to give them to you for free as they just chuck/recycle them--be sure to leave your phone number, pick up promptly, and leave a note that you want the buckets AND lids. Safeway and Sobey's have been good to us in this department, along with our local Co-op grocery stores.

Also, Tim Horton's stores get "fondant" in 4 gallon square buckets--go in at a time of day when they are not busy and ask the manager nicely to save them for you, leave your phone number, again pick up promptly and note that you also want the lids!

Be careful with buckets from hardware stores--the release chemicals used in non-food plastic containers are different from those used in food-grade plastic containers, and can be toxic.

Something else you may want to consider is that even plastic breathes. So don't store your buckets in a garage 2 feet from your spare jerry can, or your food will be garbage. If you need to, an additional layer of protection can be had by using mylar. Throw your goods in a mylar bag, seal it up with an oxygen absorber, then seal it in your bucket for optimal shelf life and nutrition maintenance.
