Does anyone use them?
We have a binder with lists and each one is page protected with a tab so we can find it fast.
I have a list for "What to do when under tornado/severe thunderstorm warning" (earthquake, flood, snow event, ice storm, environmental disasters etc... are all on separate lists)
1) Fill the extra jugs with water (this is first on almost EVERY list)
2) Get animals inside
3) Check windows make sure they are closed.
4) Secure items outside
Sublist: Toys in the boxes
Hanging plants on the ground
Chairs under patio table
Gates secured
Garbage/Recycling containers against the house
5) Call _________ to say we are secure and ready (we have a phone buddy system in place with a friend)
6) Is everything in the Thunderstorm box in the basement? (we have a large rubbermaid container in the basement with extra flashlights, batteries, first aid stuff ready to use)
7) Make sure you know where everyone is.
8) If outside HEAD FOR HOME! If not, you better call
These 8 things my guys have memorized but we still have it in the binder just in case.
Does anyone else use this? I think it is good as reference even if you don't have kids in the house.
Or am I over paranoid?
Great idea. I just started to put together something along the same lines.
If lists work for you, do it. I would only waste time looking for the list.
I would suggest that for things of immediate danger, like a tornado, you already have your stuff in your safe place .
Animals will have to be looked after but look after yourself and yours first.
No point in getting zapped by lightning chasing after a $20 lawn chair.
mamaizzy:
It's a good idea, with/for kids or not, because in a time of crisis people will often blank out, I know I would.
I have 2 binders now each one with all the info needed in them, one in our 72hour emerg box in the closet and one in my desk. Even just a checklist of essentials on a cell phone as a note is better than nothing at all.
