Hi all, I'm looking for a recommendation on a size and brand of pressure canner.
It'll get a heavier work out in the fall, (canned moose! ohboy!ohboy!ohboy!) but I'm hoping to use it year round to can smaller (relatively) batches of stew, sauces and vegetables. I dug my mom's old one out of storage, but when we examined it, it's 40 years old, the seals are shot and even if we replaced them I'm not sure I'd trust it, so off we go for a new one.
Does anyone have a favorite they'd like to recommend?

Personally, I use a Presto 23 Qt. canner that I bought at a flea market. It serves me well even though it is far from new. I have heard nothing but good reviews about the All American brand, the are pricey, but from what I understand, will be the last canner you, your children and your grandchildren will ever have to buy.
My 23 Qt. canner holds 7 quart jars, and I forget how many pint, as I have never filled it to capacity with pints. Since you will be canning moose, you would want the biggest capacity that you can afford. This will help save energy costs by running fewer larger batches instead of more smaller ones.
I would be interested in the canner you found...what brand and what condition is it in? You would be surprised how long these things last with a new gasket every once in a while. I would recommend that you go for a new seal and test it out...it may well be as good as a new one.
I think it was National? It weighs 20lbs, probably about the same size as your 23qt one as mom said it would hold 7 quart jars, and has a bolt down lid with a dial pressure gauge sticking out the top. Looking at amazon and canadian tire, it looks alot like the new all american brand.

I like my mom's Presto better then my Mirro. The Presto actually has a psi gauge where the Miirro does not. Much easier to use when you have a psi gauge. She has only ever had the one canner & just buys replacement parts as needed.

OK...blow it off...you can't get(or at least not easily) parts for the old National brand anymore.
Here is a link to a parts source for the old National Canners plus lots of other manufacturers.

Hope it helps.
i have an all american pressure canner, it's pricy, but it's worth it. all my friends have them, there's are 50 years older then mine, and are still going strong. i have the 925, but i've used a 910 too. and you can buy all the spare parts you'll ever need.

Just got a 41 quart All-American in the mail yesterday. I was told to buy high quality and the biggest you can afford. I do believe it will save money in the long run. 600 dollars over 30 years is only 20 dollars a year. I can live with that.

Nice purchase...32 pint jar capacity! Given that you can get about a pound of venison cubes(or any other meat) into a pint jar, this will come in handy after hunting season!
I am not a big hunter, but I do plan on having a lot of chickens and veggies on the land. Butcher, pick and can it every fall. 🙂
A trip to Canadian Tire, and we now have two 16qt mirro brand pressure canners. One for mom, and one for me. We were looking for the bigger 22 qt, but they didn't have it in stock. We decided to each get a smaller one, and loan them back and forth for larger batches so we can start the next one while the current one cools.
With the old boring water bath canner, I canned 20 pints of roma tomatoes, and just skinned and froze another 8lbs or so. I think I'll freeze the rest of the gardens worth as it comes ripe and consider my options for canning tomato soup and paste at a later date.
