Actually, because of this thread and a discussion we had about various bug out scenarios; we've moved the purchase of hand-held radios up on our list of expensive purchases. If there is no cell-phone service and I have to go looking for her downtown as she tries to walk home in one of those really sudden scenarios, we need to be able to find each other.

I'm hoping that if the roles are reversed, she'll do the same for me lol.

Hey Dang,

Good thinking. I am glad my wife doesn't work in the core very often now. But you are right on the money, an independent form of comms will be worth it if the cell system crashes. You might also want to thin about selecting a primary and two secondary rally points in case vehicles work but all comms don't. Scary isn't it. Trying to plan the safe link up in the chaos that will follow a major event. I wish you well on your endeavour.

Evenin' All,

Here is a link to a website to help learn Morse Code. http://www.learnmorsecode.com/

With practice this could be helpful.

I would sujest a good galaxie of ranger c.b.with a 4 stage or similar 2000 watt booster have a good 5000 watt whip Antennas, on a good night you will get any emergency broadcast, and talk to emergency units channel 9 will be monitored by emergency services also if you can afford it a VHS with lad 1 through 4 programmed into it....lad 1 is a reserved emergency channel for north america although it is used on the highway you are not supposed to talk on this channel 50 km of any major urban center....20.000 people or more....If you find the right radio man /woman, they will open up the c.b to hit on some of the ham channels...I had one years ago but it fried and it's hard to find some one to do it....

Just some ideas.....

Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...

I wasn't sure which topic to put this under, so I opted for this one as being the most relevant.
For the last couple of days, I haven't been able to access the Survivalblog website. Today I found out why. It seems that someone took offense to the site and hacked into the sites server and shut it down. If you're a fan of the site and curious about what happened, go to the SHTFPlan site and there's an explanation there.

Hello Georges. The first question I would ask is exactly what do you want this communication to do? Is it for local? Long distance? Do you want to be able to talk with other people? Listen in? News? So many thoughts.

Georges,

Welcome to this forum.

Like JustABear asked, what do you want your comms to do?? Listen?? Transmit?? Chat locally??

I would suggest you checkout this thread from the Canadian Preppers Forum. You may find some answers in here:

Big Red,

A good set of GMRS radios would be a better bet than CB's for personal communications. They run on either aa or aaa batteries which you could recharge with a small solar recharger.

CB would be a good choice for your vehicle as the vehicle battery will power it.

Who do you plan to talk to with your radio's?? How far away are they?? What type of radios do they have??

Mountainman.

GMRS are an excellent Comms option. I would recommend that you purchase from the US though as GMRS is limited to 2 watts maximum output as sold in Canada and in the US they are 5 watts output. There are a multitude of great options as well. Voice activated transmission, scrambling, tone calling, etc. Look for something listed as waterproof as opposed to water resistant.

Georges,

Here is a website you might find useful. http://www.ultimatefrs.com/ or possibly this quick blurb from Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/olspage.jsp?guideID=1072288099473&type=page&id=cat12077

If you are set on going Ham try this out: their website is: http://www.elecraft.com/k1_page.htm or http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm#k1

Cheers,

Mountainman.

PS - General question Ham types: What would be a good band for Ham?? 80m?? 40m?? 30m?? 20m?? 17m?? 15m?? What are the advantages of any of these freq's?? CW key or these new style finger-tip paddles for sending morse?? Opinions, please.

Hi! I am a Ham,

If you are not then you may want to invest in a scanner and a GRS (cb) rig. CB is 11m & has good propogation qualities.

Here are a few ontario sites

http://Www.radioworld.ca

Good luck!
