Been reorganizing the shed this week...prepper style.
In case of bug out I have placed the items we would need in order from first at front to least at last.
This way for a short term SHTF, the first pile of equipment needs to go.
As the bug out expectancy grows, we simply load piles in order front to rear.
Example, the first pile is basic camping gear.
At the end would be gardening tools, and some misc. hardware items like larger nails, screws, lag bolts, concrete mix, etc, in case we may have to build a more permanent shelter.
Once we get the pantry built, I will set up a rubbermade with 3 days food and basic staples, with subsequent containers with food for about a week each.
Added 1K Peanut Butter x6 (WalMart $4 - watch the expiry dates), some more cans of tuna (Food Basics $ .89), 6 Red Rose Tea 72s ($1.99 Food Basics). Took Farmgal's advice and bought more cast iron cookware (lovely old, gently used, large frying pan) at a garage sale for ....... $.25!
I am on a budget so instead of hitting the town I went shopping ( not nearly as fun ). I had $100 to spend I was able to get:
54 cans small, med and large of Veg, legumes, meat, fish, soup, stew
8lbs of pasta
2x 7 gallon water jugs
20 surgical masks
goggles
gloves
fish line
hooks
40m of rope
safety blanket
poncho
7 differnt medical supples
sanitizer
latex gloves
3 small propane tanks
Still had enough left for Taco Bell! I was able to get a lot more than expected. I realize I need more and did not buy items in priority but by price or sales. .... and so it begins
Most of us attended a preppers information meeting, and that, people, is prepping.
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
Got the rest of my potatoes planted -oh, my aching back! Just parsnips and carrots to go...
Seeds planted...2 heirloom cuke varieties and heirloom Midget compact canteloups planted...these are two serving melons that grown on avg 3 ft vines.
3 quarts cut rhubarb blanched and dehydrated (about a pint dried).
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband
Well. So far this week I've decided that I'm spending more effort on my hobby farm. I've lined up a source of pasture born and raised weaner pigs very close to me - they are Large Black heritage breeds. I'll be looking at these more closely to see that they are really suitable. Despite me having use of two tractors, with the cost of gas these days I'll be trying to use these only if I have to. My porkers are going to be my tractors 🙂
I've also begun the planning stages of my new farming venture. Besides the 2 pigs we are going to start with, I'm looking at some tree planting - fruits at first. I'll be adding maples as I can, for sugaring in the spring, as we are surrounded by them. I shouldn't have too much trouble adding some to my property as well.
Most importantly, I've won a small victory over this weekend. I have gotten the family on board with what I want to do. They thought I was nuts and a worrying 'sky is falling' type. I spent some time explaining and showing some examples of things that can and have happened just in the last 6 years alone. So, now with most of us on board and willing to do things and try things together we can expect some progress. Action number one for us this week as a family is we have bought and are experimenting with bulgar wheat. We've had it once so far - a breakfast one morning. We prepared it like porridge, with some raisins in it.
Myself and my eldest daughter living at home (9 years old) both liked it. My youngest daughter (5) didn't so much, until I added a little maple syrup to it. The wife, she's so picky - she ate it, complained a little about the texture (she doesn't like barley either, like I do) but said she could eat it if needed. The plan is to ease in to it and put it into our regular meal plans, get used to it. So far, I have a couple of recipes for it so we won't just be eating it like porridge.
I'm also starting to learn about livestock fencing and it's headaches. Be glad when it's figured out.

Went to the group meet in Ontario 😀
Learned how to build a quick solar oven.
Grabbed a few MRE's to try out.
Stocked up on the dollar deals from No Frills.
Started some lemoncello (3rd batch so far so good!)and am taking a crack at blackberry liquor... ready in a month!
I've been oven canning some more stuff, and vacuum sealing some as well. Finished all the beans, did all the steel cut oats.
Bought a book to start a written inventory. I better get at that.
Vanilla was on sale so I bought 3 bottles for the basement storage.
Emptied a 20 KG bag of sugar into canning jars. Big ones that were too tall for my pressure cooker were first. Hubby wants to put it in a plastic pail but I don't like the idea of rodents chewing and I think if things crash, I'd like to be able to share the sugar without showing how much we have. Now that we have that done, I may be content to put the next bag in a bucket.
We also tried the white bean soup that I made. More of a bean soup base, add veggies to it. Very good.
Also tried our home made salsa. Hubby likes it and I could get used to it. lol
Food will get you through times with no money, but money will not get you through times with no food.
Dried 25 pounds of onions and "finished" the garden enough to get a couple dozen herbs in.
Took advantage of a good pasta sale..
10 bags (650g) at .88 each.
Probably should have gotten more!

Hi Runs with Scissors, I have large blacks as well, I do use them for some clean up work and digging garden area's but also picked them because they are a pasture pig first and formost an are more grazer's then the many of the old fashion breeds, I have found that mine (I have two different breeding lines) are both excellent grazers and "ok" rooters, for me personally, I would go with a different breed if I was clearing bush. Will be interested to see how you find it goes with yours, keep us posted.. great news about the family being on board!

We've moved into the new home (outside of calgary now) and have finally finished setting up the shelves and work benches in the garage. Next step is to figure out where all of our supplies (prepping and camping) ended up during the packing 🙁
Added some toiletries and pasta to the pantry
Picked up some rope, another jerry can, and some tuck tape at canadian tire.
Also a 10lb fire extinguisher for the bedroom as it's on the second floor and we're in a rural setting now; it does have a full-time fire department but prepping is about being safe, not sorry ❗
Scored a used Magellan eXporist 500 for $50.00,
Got a rechargable (hand grank) am/fm weather channel radio at Wal-mart for $29.00,
Got given twenty 6 Gal. food grade square pails with lids.
Got complete custom shelter frame work (just had to pick it up) 12' x 18' and a commercial tarp that covers the back wall over the top and the front wall (have to make up something for the end wall)
Was a good week
