Soo... How ones one protect preps from rodents when they are so determined that they chew holes through plastic buckets? Lost 80lb of Durham flour and 80 litres of Water plus some miscellaneous bits n pieces. Forgot to add, they also ate their way up through the workshop floor.
And.....GO
regular bait traps and a good supply of blocks to keep mice-rats out and a good supply of de dirt to help keep bugs out.. its a never ending battle, but in a nut shell, you need to give them something easier then the buckets, sorry for your losses

Ouch, sorry about your losses.
I keep my buckets of stuff, and even wrapped stuff not in buckets, inside an old non-working fridge or deep freezer in the garage (not anything that will freeze). These old appliances are all are surrounded by metal and so far no pests have invaded them.
Time for a nice mouser kitty cat?

We have one of those...the only buckets we've had a problem with are in the outdoor feed bin near the chicken coop.
We also encourage the garden snakes on the property...seen a few field mouse butts hanging out of a snake mouth!
if you look here you can purchase some items in #10 cans that are rodent proof
Secure all access to your storage area. Steel wool in small holes works. Rodents will not chew through that. Bait stations around your pails. Filled with real rat poison, not canadian tire-strength stuff. Buy it off a pest control guy.
A cat helps;)

One is none, two is one.
We use galvanised steel garbage cans. Keeps everything out and gives us peace of mind. We like multiple catch traps with two one way doors. http://www.woodstreambrands.ca/victor-tin-cat-mouse-trap-with-windows-bm308 Some of them get Smart so you have to switch things up

I Like the galvanized concept. harder to stack or conceal but they are mouse, squirrel, chipmunk safe.
Nice second layer for very precious goods
You can buy new paint cans at most diy stores. Pricey but can be useful. Camouflage them with labels from old paint cans if you need to.
Jimbo,
Can you breakdown what you got for your money?

Nice stack of food! 🙂 The one in Toronto has been very useful to us and we did similar as you. They also have incorporated a smaller "grocery store" like section where you can buy produce, daily essentials, etc.
