<< I always thought a soviet country would be good for the people. Mainly because it was created by the people for the people>>
I hope you're kidding. Just curious, have you watched/read Animal Farm?
<< I was also wondering in regards to the soviet union, what things happened>>
collapse of communism was due to a bad foundation. Anything that is build on a bad foundation is going to collapse.
absolutley. this means we are surely doomed.
communism was bad but definetly had its good parts. capitlaizm on the other hand is a runaway train and the collapse of our way of life here will make the collapse of the soviet union look like a picnic.
Ditto. At least in Russia, most didn't face homelessness. As far as I am concerned, that's problem number one in a north American collapse. If you have a mortgage or rent...just expect homelessness at some point as part of your plan. BRRRR!
I have a Tactical Harness and I have a Tool Belt. The Tool Belt is more Useful.
Just an afterthought....I remember someone saying, I think it was Chris Martenson, " Even if we made Ron Paul dictator for life...It wouldn't stop this collapse." We are far past any political solutions...so politics in prepping is just a blame game and can lead to a lot of un necessary deaths. The train is rolling without brakes and is about to crash. We can argue about what we want to rebuild...on a really small scale, localised version....afterwards. In the mean time...Fasten your seatbelt.

You said you had food, infrastructure and so on (we didn't) but let's not forget that the western world in capitalism and democratic societies had that too and way more. They had freedom of speech, freedom to travel (outside eastern block and China I mean) , the option to choose their leaders, were able to live without fear of their government and a secret police and a lot more.
Let's not confuse a social and economic anomaly like communism with natural social and economic cycles. Recessions came and went for the last few hundred years and they will do the same in the future.
I tried to refrain from answering to this post but I couldn't. I lived under a communism dictatorship regime and I don't remember any good parts, I really tried. I could tell you the bad parts but I don't have the time and this is not the thread. To tell me about the good parts of communism is like telling a nazi victim about the good parts of nazism. The irony to me is that posting about good parts of nazism would get you in trouble but saying it in the communism context it's OK even though nazis were able to do their evil for about 12 years whereas communism lasted for 70 years and made way more victims and it's still doing it.
Unless somebody has a crystal globe I believe it is impossible to predict exactly what and when it will happen. I can accept that anything is on the table but I stopped making economic predictions after a few failed ones.
To answer to the original post I think that in the case of a total social collapse I don't see any reason why people all over N America will not move to different areas if they believe it would be in their interest and some of them will be able to do some nasty things to take what they need from others. Nothing that this continent hasn't seen before.
Sorry about my rant but communism is a very "touchy" subject for me. Having said that I didn't have the intention of offending anybody and I apologise in advance if I did.
All the best

Well like i Said; If you had compared Ukraine and some other parts of the Soviet Union before the collapse and after you would see quite a shocking change in living standards for the worse. Much, much worse.
