You don't have or need an Army Surplus store although they help lots. Now you do have a few other stores there, like the hardware stores or farmers stores, even dollar stores there. Really those stores have just about everything you need as well. You need a BOB (Bug out Bag), Go Bag (normally in car, because it goes with you) DODGE (get out of Dodge bag) which is a full everything bag. Now I suggest at least an alternative to the Car/Van as everything will be blocked by others. So how about bicycles with trailers, motorcycles, ATV's, all with or without trailers. Relocate to a remote area, join the comunity for no single person or small group can stop the angry hordes of Zombies. Zombies = non Preppers or Survivalists out to steal or kill you for your food. Of course that is in the absolute worse case scenarios.

Rations are great and fairly affordable is you can conserve the package and use it for 2-3 meals. The following is a list of some other items that are great and more traditional to be added into your BOB Bug Out Bag – your Dodge Back as in Get out of Dodge.

soldier fuel bars a Canadian company who has their product in Canadian Rations & maybe US rations?
foil pouches of fish, some are dated for over 10yrs, I picked some up at a dollar store for $1 each WallyWorld was selling them for $3 each (bought 25 of each flavour)

powdered soup – chicken-beef
angle hair pasta – easy to make better than those little ramen packs for taste and health
some Seasoning eg, taco, bbq rub etc for extra flavour
Hemp Hearts – Hemp Seeds
Honey Cakes with fortified with nuts and berries, packaged up in sealer = last up to 10yrs
Christmas Cake, it was designed to be able to be stored for up to 5yrs in paper alone for Troops in WWI
you can use Tuna Cans as stated above, stronger than pop cans,
get some solid fuel as well as some Methyl Hydrate 90% (denatured alcohol) or higher, repackage the mouth to make it even more airtight.
vac pack it all, put in Tyvec packages you can make yourself
Gun Tape/Tuck tape it all (Al Green eat your heart out on that one)
plus some regular BOB things
one of the most overlooked items is a small pair of pliers that can cut wire! That is a must.
P51 or a Canadian Can opener
The Canadian Version is over twice the height designed to be used in the Artic with mitts and gloves on, and just generally feels easier to use.

I think we should take note of the number of fire starting options WildE gave in the list. In many survival situations fire will be very important. It can keep you warm and therefore save your life from hypothermia. Also, boiling water for purification comes to mind. Not forgetting a signal fire (if you want to be found) or lighting up a rocket stove (if you don't want to be found). Fire starters are very susceptible to the elements, so having as many options as possible is important.

With the exception of the MRE's
all of the things listed can be found, or made from items at Hardware Stores and Dollar Stores, and the like.
Dollar stores have their place for example, Dollerama here sells awesome LED lights for Umbrella Tables. Works the best!
get 4 cheapo sun powered lamps, take them apart, remove the bulb, now you have 4 AA sized sun powered recharges. Takes One day in bright sunny or two days in not so bright conditions.
They also sell cheapo survival blankets, the shiny ones and now are selling cheapo survival tubes, for $2 can't go wrong grab a few.
Note: the cheapo survival blankets, can be linked together, inside a tent, shiny side down to reflect heat, so even lightweight tents can be easier to heat in winter and stay cooler in summer, try it!

There is one addition that most people will tend to forget, medicated cream for common skin irritations. PENATEN, is a good one and comes in a 55g tin. Great for those who get heat rash between the legs or else where. 😳

Plus cheaper options: country/rural hardware shops, fishing tackle stores in small coastal regions, secondhand goods stores, garage sales, reject shops and bargain basements. Don't forget the "for sale" ads in local papers and "gumtree".

One thing that I was contemplating, was making a luggage carrier for my backpack. Much like a golf bag rig but with a wider wheel base. As much as I would like to think that I could haul everything thats in my BOB. I am a realist, and know that I would have a heart attack by the time that I got to the end of the block. A bicycle trailer, convertion to rickshaw and hooked up to Wild E's dog (Big) would do the trick. 😉
