I have seen this before and I think it is a simple solution for some applications. Unfortunately it will not work for me as we are on the Canadian Shield.

Not every time.
My dad not wanting to haul water during our harsh winters decided to dig a well inside the house. We spent a couple hours every day after school digging that thing. My brothers down the hole and us girls pulling up the buckets of dirt and wheel barrowing it through the house and dumping it over the hill. (dad built the house into a hillside and we had a great toboggan hill right out side the front door). Any ways, dad was lining the well with 4' sections of culvert as we dug down. At around 20' the boys hit a ginormous rock which covered 3/4 of the bottom of the well and sat well under the edge of the culvert lining. Couldn't dynamite it without blowing the whole house up. So we spent the next year after school wheeling dirt back into the house to fill the hole.
