What type of personality type do you think will be the biggest thread if the SHTF?
I don't often watch TV but I did last night and was surprised when commercials came on showing some of the "reality" TV shows. If these people are this nasty when the world is watching, will they still be as bad? What about gang members that seem to have no fear. Or better yet what about people like Rob Ford?
wow, now that is a scary answer
I would have guessed bullies
You mean like lower taxes and stopping the entitlement in our governments Rob Ford? Ya, I"m all for that.

There is no menace like the jock/bro/frat boy clique, in my opinion. They would be the most dangerous. Young people in general are dumb as hell, but young dudes are dangerous, selfish, and I'd hate to sound old fashioned, but people aren't raised to value common courtesy and respect anymore, for themselves or others, that's why they feel the need to group up.
I'm also freaked out by hicks. Yeah that's a broad term. Believe me, I'm equally disdainful of people in the city, but for all the opposite reasons. City Hipsters are a weak people, and they hate strength, or old fashioned manners and behaviour. They'll be the first to go, warding them off will be pretty easy, as the only thing they have to offer when SHTF is passive aggression, and maybe their kick-ass bicycles(I'll give them that).
Since exploring prepping, I've seen some downright bizarre posts from some 'country' preppers NOT on this site. I've heard talk of keeping prisoners, which just blows my mind as to how incredibly creepy that is in a SHTF scenario. These are mostly American, no offence to Americans. There is some serious gun toting white trash on this continent.
There are far too many people who hold little or no value in education and the pursuit of knowledge while at the same time stocking up on as much firepower as possible. And that could be the greatest threat of all.
Oh another thing. The father figure. You're on a crusade to protect your family from the forces of evil, but something tells me half of these people are just going to end up stealing from other people, as they typically have multiple kids to feed and a wife. The real world is grey, but when you have a family the grey separates to black and white and that makes you a radical in my books.
I've seen countless discussions where dudes try to argue every single aspect of morality, trying so desperately to convince themselves of every possible way to get into a situation where they have to blow someones head off all in order to "PRUH-TEKT MAH FAM'LY". It's gross. Not feeling it.

nope
I meant more of how he appears - very strong and determined to get what he wants, no backing down plus his anger.
Singlecell,
Wow it looks like you have given this a lot of thought. I can't imagine why anyone would "keep prisoners", its a waste of resources. 🙂

You ever read or seen The Road? Book or movie... well they keep starving wasted humans in a basement to eat. It struck a nerve with me. Honestly never thought or contemplated about getting a firearm till I read that. So nasty...
And yeah. I work in security and close protection but I gotta say the sizing up of a situation is very natural to me. I want to know who's a threat, and where I can escape every time I walk into a situation.
The first post is dealing with pure scum. Either some college level lord of the flies stuff, or just a bunch of crazy hicks. In any case I would either be outnumbered or outgunned. These are losing situations and that is why they are on the list.
In the case of dealing with a father who is going to rob me in an attempt to try to feed his wife and kids, this is an unfortunate case, but very likely. It's like dealing with a wild animal, pure instinct, all civilization goes out the window.
It's kinda funny though, I don't think I could leave a family to suffer being mobbed by a bunch of hicks or thugs. The game changes, depending on the where or when.
I have long experience with the on line gaming community, a place where people are whoever they want to be with no real structure or rules.
Invariably, those who wish to be in power, in control of others, are the very worst type of people suited to be leaders in any situation. Those who are trying to build something lasting, for everyone to share in the development and benefits make good leaders.

Bingo. It will be the big feeling Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department or the guy that everyone calls "Captain". I was recently acosted by a military policeman with a god complex. Before the collapse these folks are just annoying big mouths. After the collapse, they will take command and have a group of followers that will back him to the hilt. They will want to "commandeer" all of our preps for the good of the community. When people are hungry it won't take much talking by these mouthpieces to convince them that stealing food from people that prepared is the right thing to do. This is another good reason to maintain OPSEC.
Also, right now is the time to start cultivating neighbourhood loyalty. Spreading around to your neighbours some garden produce and the odd cut of meat at butchering time wouldn't hurt.

Interesting. If I may add something I did not consider before... I'll try to keep it short.
I come from a small town community that is very proud of that fact. Mostly Protestant and Catholic. There's a dude, a hard working farmer that every single person in this town knows, like the name is famous. Very polite man on the surface, big beard, big gut, typical farmer.
He used to work out a contract with my grandparents(renting some of the farm), and I guess no one in my family figured, but after my grandfather died, leaving my grandmother a widow, quickly succumbing to dementia and Alzheimer's we clued in pretty quick. Things started disappearing. Like thousands of dollars, my grandfathers truck, and this guy's frequency of visits to my grandmother increased. At one point he tried to charge her five grand for replacing a culvert in the driveway(she didn't even tell us) that took me and my uncle three hours and a couple hundred bucks to replace.
Lord knows what else he got his hands on. Eventually there was a fallout. My brother called him a thief in public, he came to my door threatening to kill my brother and whatever else. Eventually my grandmothers house was raided a few times(after she degenerated and had to be put in a home).
I've heard of church communities raiding senile people before. These people have to be the lowest of the low, a step above pedos.
So yeah these community "leaders" like you say, are just waiting, sometimes over a decade to take all they can.
That farmer was a thief, pure and simple, but I wouldn't blame the "church community". There are lots of folks around who take advantage when the opportunity presents itself.
In these parts if an older gent passes away and leaves a widow and there are no sons who live nearby, some guys figure, "well what does she need that for now anyway?" The man's property either up and walks away or is bought cheap.
Then there's the "he told me I could have it just before he died and I just came to pick it up". Both of these situations have to be nipped in the bud quick by family members. Also, if a house or building is left with all of someone's worldly goods in it, it will sit for a while and then mysteriously burn down. No doubt cleaned out first and then burned to cover the crime.
This is getting away from the original topic but I'll throw out one more thing. I've noticed that if an old uninhabited house has a light left on and the lawn mowed, no one will touch it. Cut the power and let the weeds take over and it's open season. In order of disappearance: furniture and appliances, wood stove, pump, copper lighting rod wire, electrical panel, interior doors, cupboards, copper piping, copper wiring, S/S flue, storm windows, wooden windows AND frames, metal roofing, and then interior wooden walls (for kindling).

Don't get me wrong I know all kinds of good religious people. But the church community is good camouflage for some. Some people are crazy man. We fought like dogs for power of attorney and stuff. It was scary, what was at stake.
It's not getting away from the original topic. You're absolutely right about maintenance. This is something we've looked after for years now.
The organized criminal.
They are generally sociopaths, organized, violent and armed.
When the veil of society is drawn back, we will see these folks move as pre-formed platoons of violent criminals.
